  1. WATER UNIT SECTION C SOLUTIONS

  2. SOLUBILITY – The amount of solute that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent…at a given temperature and pressure • SOLUTE – Part of solution present in smaller amount • SOLVENT – Part of solution present in greater amount • Does NOT always have to be a liquid

  3. SOLUBILITY

  4. List the factors that do NOT effect how much of a substance can dissolve TIME STIRRING SIZE / SURFACE AREA OF SOLUTE

  5. List the factors that DO effect how much of a substance can dissolve TEMPERATURE PRESSURE SOLVENT

  6. Saturated Solution – One that has a much solute as it can hold Unsaturated Solution – One that can hold more solute SupersaturatedSolution– unstable, unusual solution – where there is more solute dissolved than is theoretically supposed to be….weird

  7. Typical solubility curve for solids If you have a horizontal line of solubility what does that show for the substance graphed? TEMPERATURE HAS NO EFFECT

  8. A solubility line with a steep incline tells you what about the relationship of the solute to water? TEMPERATURE HAS GREAT EFFECT

  9. Each point plotted ON the solubility line tells you what about that substance? SATURATION

  10. What do points BELOW the line show? UNSATURATION – more could be added

  11. Where on a solubility graph would you find a SUPERSATURATED solution? Above the line

  12. ·What will happen to the Solubility of a Solid in water when the temperature of the water is lowered? DECREASES

  13. ·In contrast, what will happen to the solubility of a GAS when the temperature of the water is lowered? INCREASES

  14. A gas’s solubility is dependent upon… TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE

  15. WATER POLARITY

  16. Crystalline structure of Ionic compounds & How they Dissolve

  17. Some Common Acids, Formulas and Uses

  18. Some Common Bases, Formulas and Uses

  19. How Does Your Water Softener Work?
