1. SRR ConceptualModel Relationship of Ecosystem Services to Sustainability and Indicator Based Monitoring

2. A Model of What? • The Slinky Experiment • Your Health

3. Linkage between questions and measurements Important Rangeland Questions Sustainability Develop conceptual model Identify Key Processes Identify Indicators Are Indicators Useful Over Time?

4. Indicator Development • Develop the Indicators based upon issues

5. Framework • Need for a conceptual framework for interpretation • Determine if the indicator set would address critical questions

6. Conceptual Model • SRR Conceptual Model is not a predictive or mathematical model. • Framework for • Evaluating the validity of the SRR indicator set • Explaining what the indicators mean • Explaining how they integrate

7. States and Processes • The “State” boxes refer to the current status as assessed by the indicators tracked. • Processes are the ongoing activities and interactions within and between biophysical and socio-economic systems • Indicators used to measure processes

11. Conclusions • The SRR Conceptual Model needs to address interactions between ecological, social and economic components • Indicators as identified in the booklet need to be evaluated for their ability to address temporal and spatial inventory and monitoring questions
