Review of the “Iron Curtain” • The Iron Curtain took physical form in the shape of border defenses between the countries of the western and eastern blocs. • These were some of the most heavily militarized areas in the world, . • The inner German border was marked in rural areas by double fences made of steel mesh with sharp edges. • In urban areas high concrete walls are built

  3. In some places a "death strip" was constructed on the East German side of the barrier, in which unauthorized access would be met with bullets. • This area was patrolled by both East and West German border

  4. What was the Berlin Wall? • A barrier separating East & West Berlin.

  5. What was the Berlin Blockade? • Soviet Union cutting off supply routes in & out of West Berlin from the Allied forces • Soviets wanted complete control of Berlin

  6. What was the Berlin Airlift? • Result of Blockade • U.S. & Britain fly all food & supplies into Berlin • Lasted for 321 days • 272,000 flights

  7. Communist World: • USSR • Soviet Bloc • China • North Korea • later Cuba • Regions in Africa

  8. So…what should be the response of the U.S.? • Truman Doctrine: • The U.S. will provide economic and military aid to stop the spread of communism to other nations. • “Containment” • NATO
