Sentence Structure. Year 10 EAL Miss Casha. Active Sentences. An active sentence is when the subject performs the action of the verb . Examples: Jarrod is painting the fence on Sunday. “Jarrod” is the active subject, i.e. doing the action (painting).

  2. Active Sentences An active sentence is when the subject performs the action of the verb. Examples: • Jarrod is painting the fence on Sunday. “Jarrod” is the active subject, i.e. doing the action (painting). • Sofia is polishing the floor today. “Sofia” is the active subject, i.e. doing the action (polishing). • The Gorilla is eating the banana. “Gorilla” is the active subject, i.e. doing the action (eating).

  3. Active Sentences Some examples: • Harry ate six patties at dinner. (active) • Sue changed the flat tire. (active) • We are going to watch a movie tonight. (active) • I ran the obstacle course in record time. (active) • The crew paved the entire stretch of highway. (active) TASK: Write five active sentences.

  4. Prepositions Role of a Preposition • Prepositions are important when constructing sentences. A preposition sits before a noun to show the noun's relationship to another word in the sentence.  • It might help you to think of a preposition as a word which describes anywhere a mouse could go.

  5. Prepositions Some examples: • Molly squeezed through the gap in the wall. • The Elephant stomped on the dirt. • The apple rolled down the hill. • Alexander tripped over his shoelace. • A Mouse ran under the couch. • Caitlyn laughed after she slipped on the banana. TASK: As a class, identifythe prepositions in each sentence.
