  11. US. Leading Economic Indicators (Released Dec. 18, 2008; next release Jan 26, 2009)  Thecoincident index fell in November, driven by a very largecontraction in employment and a smaller drop in industrial production.  Since May, the coincident index hasdecreased 1.8 percent (a -3.5 percent annual rate).  Real GDP contracted at a 0.5 percent annual rate in the third quarter of 2008.

  12.  Continued widespread deterioration in the composite indexes suggests that the recession that began in December 2007 will continue into the new year, and the contraction in economic activity could deepen further in the near term.  U.S. leading index decreased 0.4 percent, due tolarge declines in building permits, stock prices, initial unemployment claims, which offset the continued positive contributions from real money supply (M2) and the yield spread.  The six – month change in the leading index has continued to fall….., the weaknesses among the leading indicators have remained widespread in recent months.

The sixth-month growth rate of the coincident index fell to –3.3% (a -6.4 percent annual rate), also its lowest level since 1975. Real GDP continued its downtrend through the third quarter of 2008 – it declined at a 1.9 percent annual rate. This is the first time since the second half of 2001 that real GDP has declined in consecutive quarters.

  18. The leading economic index registered another sharp decline in November, following an equally large decline in October.  With November’s large decline, the six – month growth rate for the leading index fell to -10.4 percent (about a -19.8 percent annual rate) from May to November 2008, the weakest in more than 33 years.
