The Civilian Sacrifices of Total War: Insights from WWI
In the context of Total War, civilians face significant sacrifices during large-scale conflicts like World War I. This project explores how non-soldiers, particularly in small communities, experience the war's impact. Through the memoir of Emilie Carles, a French woman who lived through WWI, we analyze the emotional and social transformations that occur amid warfare. The reading sessions will delve into the realities of Total War, comparing early perceptions of conflict with the stark aftermath. Students will reflect on sacrifices, create found poetry, and produce letters embodying both soldier and civilian experiences.
