Plan B Routes • Purpose- allow schools to open on days when inclement weather would normally result in school closure • Method • Move stops from smaller roads that are unplowed to more heavily-travelled roads that are plowed • Eliminate sections of roads that do not have a reliable turnaround • Implement county-wide during each incident

Surrounding Counties • Surveyed eight surrounding counties • Seven do not have a Plan B • Some tried and experienced dramatic drop in attendance • One has a Plan B (Greene) • Total enrollment 3,128 (vs 13,623) • Area 157 sq miles (vs 724) • Have used Sheriff vehicles to transport Sw/IEP • 15% of students impacted • ACPS open 62%, GC open 46%

  7. Challenges • Consolidation increases risk at stops • Line of sight reduced • Slippery roads • Crowded stops • Impact on Sw/IEP with existing tport vehicles • Added cost for Routing • Must maintain two sets of routes (1 FTE-worth of added work) • Routes would have different arrival times
