  12. CCSS Assessment System Transitions • Our change to Common Core is at the heart of assessment changes for ELA and Math • NCLB requires states to assess state standards • We’ve changed standards so we need to change assessments • What we change to is our choice • Smarter Balanced is where we are headed for ELA and Math • IMPT: There are currently no assessment consortia established for Science • Graduation requirements are a state’s choice • Supt Dorn is proposing reduced graduation requirements • ESEA Waiver changes expectation that all students are proficient next year (2014) – it gives us more time and more individualized school-based goals 2012-13 Pt.3-CCSS Systems Webinar

  13. Two Purposes of High School Assessments

  20. Transition Supports for the“WHAT” and the “HOW” 2012-13 Pt.3-CCSS Systems Webinar

  21. Our guiding beliefs and approach for CCSS Implementation in WA 2012-13 Pt.3-CCSS Systems Webinar 2-Prongs: • The What: Content Shifts (for students and educators) • Belief that past standards implementation efforts have provided a strong foundation on which to build for CCSS; HOWEVER there are shifts that need to be attended to in the content. • The How: System “Remodeling” • Belief that successful CCSS implementation will not take place top down or bottom up – it must be “both, and…” • Belief that districts across the state have the conditions and commitment present to engage wholly in this work. • Professional learning systems are critical

  22. 2012-13 CCSS Implementation Resources & Activities 2012-13 Pt.3-CCSS Systems Webinar

  23. The “What”: Common Core ELA and Math Shifts • Shifts in ELA • Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction and informational texts in addition to literature • Reading and writing grounded in evidence from the text • Regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary These apply to content area (social studies, science, and technical subject) teachers as well as to English teachers. • Shifts in Mathematics • Focus: 2-3 topics focused on deeply in each grade • Coherence: Concepts logically connected from one grade to the next and linked to other major topics within the grade • Rigor: Fluency with arithmetic, application of knowledge to real world situations, and deep understanding of mathematical concepts 2012-13 Pt.3-CCSS Systems Webinar

  24. The “How”: System Remodeling 1. What do all students need to know and be able to do as a result of the CCSS? 3. How do we design a professional learning system to support them? 2. What do the adults in the system need to know and be able to do to support all students? 2012-13 Pt.3-CCSS Systems Webinar

  25. Washington Connecting Professional Learning Content and Providers Across WA • Including: • School Districts • Higher Education • Education and Educator Content Associations • Third Party Providers / Vendors AWSP Asst. Principals-2/7/13

  29. NEXT: Consider Phase 2 within your Building Context Start the transition by Setting the Course! • Identifying a core group of leaders (across grades and subjects) as a lead CCSS implementation team • Take stock of current instructional practices, strengths, and challenges • Establish a shared vision that will guide CCSS implementation with all students and educators – what will it mean for your district/building? • Developing District-Specific CCSS Implementation Plans • Use the CCSS District Readiness Assessment to inform transition planning • Access Achieve and Learning Forward materials to inform professional learning • Establish short and long term goals to begin moving forward 2012-13 Pt.3-CCSS Systems Webinar

  30. What should educators be doing to implement CCSS? • Use the 3-year transition plan and resources as a guide • Attend ESD trainings on the CCSS aligned our transition plan • Take time to collaboratively learn the CCSS in the transition areas • Read and re-read the CCSS • Look at examples on the Illustrative Math Project webpage • Study relevant Progression document • Link content standards to the Big Ideas (ELA) and the Mathematical Practices • Understand the relationships between topics and grades • Look for opportunities to incorporate the CCSS in the classroom 2012-13 Pt.3-CCSS Systems Webinar
