  2. exercise • Answer these questions: • Briefly tell us what your work experience has been up to now. • What motivated you to begin/return to school at this time? Was that decision motivated by a desire to change careers? If so, why?

  3. Discuss • How important do you think it is for you to feel a sense of pride in the work you do? Have you felt valued in your work? • In choosing a job, which would be more important to you: security or the opportunity for self-expression?

  4. Discuss • How is self-concept related to satisfaction in a career?

  5. Discuss • What role do values play in the career decision process? • Look at your values related to security, money, status, achievement, helping others, finding meaning, personal growth, and so on. How do your values relate to your career selection?

  7. Discuss • What factors (of the ones listed above, or others) would you/did you consider most in selecting your occupation? Explain why you considered these over others.

Discuss • What are some of your behavioral styles in college that might carry over to your eventual career? • To what degree do you think your level of satisfaction of your work will parallel your level of satisfaction as a student? • Do you think that the kind of student you are will also have some influence on the kind of worker you are likely to become?

  11. The Process of Deciding on a Career STEPS TO TAKE • Begin by focusing on yourself • Generate alternative solutions • Gather and assess information • Weigh and prioritize your alternatives • Make the decision and formulate a plan • Carry out the decision • Get feedback

  12. Discuss • What options do you think people have who feel that they’re caught in dead-end jobs that give little satisfaction? • What would you say if they claim that they can’t quit and that there are no other jobs available to them?

Choices at Work • If you experience discontent in your work, focus on those factors within your job that you can change • Identify ways you can create meaning in your work • If you must remain at an unsatisfying job, find something outside your job that fulfills your need for recognition, significance, productivity, and excitement • Assess whether your attitudes about work help or hinder you in achieving career success

  14. Discuss • Discuss the concept that work itself does not give meaning in life, but that a person gives meaning to his or her occupation

  15. Discuss • What meaning have you found in the work you’ve done so far? Has work been a means of self-expression for you? • Do you agree or disagree with the position that your adjustment to work affects all the other areas of your life? Discuss.

Changing Careers in Midlife • Being aware of career options is a great asset at midlife • Attitudes and fears about changing careers that are left unquestioned and unexamined make change much harder • Both men and women may experience the desire to change career paths in midlife • People who feel stuck in their jobs should ask themselves whether their personal dissatisfaction outweighs the financial rewards

  17. Discuss • Discuss what you get or expect to get from work. What might your life be like if you weren’t able to work? How do you imagine life would be if you were retired?

  18. RecreationDiscuss • Identify some of your recreational pursuits. How do you view the importance of recreation? What kind of balance do you have between the demands of work and school with making time for recreation?

  19. Life After Retirement • Some retirees may experience a void, feelings of deprivation, and dissatisfaction • Others may become actively involved in recreation, community affairs, volunteer work, or new ventures • Retirees may feel a loss of status over no longer having a professional role

  20. Discuss • What can you do to prepare for retirement? (not just financially) • How can you continue living and feeling a sense of productivity even though you may eventually retire?

  21. Life After Retirement • By keeping themselves vital as physical, psychological, spiritual, and social beings, people can view retirement as a new beginning • The five retirement paths are: • Continuers • Adventurers • Searchers • Easy gliders • Retreaters

  22. Balancing Work and Recreation • Work alone does not generally lead to a rich existence • Recreation involves creating ourselves anew and is a path to vitality; It requires the ability to let go and experience life • The appropriate balance between work and recreation depends on the needs of the individual • Pursuit of leisure activities is associated with improved physical and cognitive functioning, increased happiness, and greater longevity
