Bell Ringer • In your notebook, write the question, letter, and answer to the following question: • Choose the word or set of words that, when inserted in the sentence, best fits the meaning of the sentence as a whole.  • A veteran of both stage and screen, Richard Harris brought a certain level of ------- to his roles, lending ------- to each character that he played. • (A) candor . . Uncertainty (B) insouciance . . Experience • (C) whimsy . . Depth (D) gravitas . . Dignity • (E) animosity . . warmth

  3. What is an analogy? • A similarity between two things that are otherwise not alike • Why is this relevant? • Analogies are designed to test your verbal reasoning by identifying relationships • There are 19 analogy questions on the SAT

  4. How to address analogy questions • Identify the relationship • Determine whether you are comparing antonyms or synonyms • Identify the type of word in the analogy (adjective, noun, adverb, etc.)

  5. “Is a Type Of” Analogies • One item in the analogy is a form of the other • “Is a type of” can be inserted into the analogy • Ballad : song = a ballad is a type of song

  6. “Is a Part Of” Analogies • One item in the analogy is a part of the other • Card : Deck = a card is part of a deck

  7. Putting it all together • In analogy questions, you are comparing two analogies based on the relationship in the first. • Tree : Forest :: Flower : Bouquet • A tree is a part of the forest in the same way a flower is part of a bouquet.

  8. Analogy Practice • On a separate sheet of paper, complete the analogy questions on pp.105-106 of the textbook. • For each response, write out the analogy • Ex. Actor : Cast :: Singer : Choir- write “An actor is a part of a cast in the same way a singer is part of a choir”

  9. Bell Ringer • The following sentence contains either a single error or no error at all. If the sentence contains an error, circle the one underlined part that must be changed to make the sentence correct. If the sentence contains no error, circle choice E.  • By the time (A) Mitzie and myself (B) got to the box office, all (C)of the tickets for the show had already been sold (D). No error (E)

  10. “Is a place where” Analogies • One item in the analogy is a place where the other item can be found • Laboratory : Experiments = a laboratory is a place where experiments are conducted

  11. “Is used to” Analogies • One item in the analogy is used to perform the other item • Analgesic : Pain = an analgesic is used to lessen pain

  12. Analogy Practice • Complete the analogy practice questions on pp.113-114 and pp.120-121 by writing the sentence that represents the complete analogy.
