  7. Now to Analogies Analogies show similarities, or things in common, between pairs of words. The relationships between the words in analogies usually fall into different categories.

  8. Seven Different Analogies Seven Analogies 1. Purpose 2. Opposites 3. Part / Whole 4. Action / Object 5. Association 6. Object / Location 7. Cause / Effect

  9. 1. Purpose Purpose - One word in the pair shows the purpose of the other word (scissors : cut)

  10. 2. Opposites Opposites - The words are opposites ( light : dark)

  11. 3. Part / Whole Part /Whole - One word in the pair is a part; the other word is a whole (leg : body) body leg

  12. 4. Action / Object Action / Object - One word in the pair does an action with or to the other word, an object (fly : airplane)

  13. 5. Association Association - One word in the pair is what you think of or associate when you see the other (Cow : Milk)

  14. 6. Object / Location Object / Location -One word in the pair tells the location where the other word, an object, is found (Car : Garage) garage car

  15. 7. Cause / Effect Cause / Effect - One word in the pair tells the cause; the other word shows the effect (practice : improvement)
