Continental Drift • In 1912, German scientist, Alfred Wegener hypothesized that the continents of Earth move over time. • He also proposed that all the continents were once massed together as one, called Pangaea. • Evidence: • Continents fit like puzzle pieces. • Fossils and rock layers match on different continents. • Glacial deposits were found near the equator. Plate Tectonics • The Earth is divided into large plates composed of oceanic and continental crust. • Convection currents in the mantle of Earth causes sea-floor spreading. • Magma is forced to the surface and forms mid-ocean ridges between two plates. • As more magma rises the plates are pushed apart causing earthquakes, volcanoes and the formation of new mountain ranges.
