  5. As the lecturer in the video says, body language consists of five main aspects: appearance, posture, gestures, eye contact, and facial expressions. To put it in more detail, your appearance or the way you look always conveys to others something special, such as what taste you seek after. Posture — the way you stand, communicate with others, and even relax yourself — tells others more than your words do. Gestures usually add a visual dimension to what you are saying. Eye contact shows your interest, courage and confidence. Facial expressions are a mirror of your emotions. Summary: Briefly speaking, there are three main skills that affect our social activities. They are nonverbal skills, verbal skills, and techniques. Nonverbal skills are ruled by our body language. According to the lecturer in the video, half of our mark on society is achieved through our nonverbal skills. In other words, our body language reveals more the kind of person we are than it is widely believed to. Body language is a process of communication through conscious or unconscious gestures or poses. 返回 >>>more Path of thinking: • How many skills affect our success in social activities? • How does body language work in our social activities?

  6. focused on the way we stand, the way we approach others, and the way we display our abilities. Gestures are often overdone by presenters. If we find someone’s ideas and charm glow with the help of gestures, we should keep in mind where they come in; but on the other hand, when we find someone’s gestures add nothing but boredom to his speech, we should see to it that such a thing will not happen to ours. We should apply our skills of “eye contact and facial expressions” to where we show respect or liking for the views of others, and where we feel confidence in ourselves. Summary: Now that we become aware of the importance of body language to our success in social contacts and we are also clear about its five major aspects through which our body language sends messages to others, it is quite necessary for us to better ourselves in the application of body language. Our positive appearance can be effected through the appropriate clothes we wear and the popular but well-dressed hairstyles we keep. The improvement of our posture should be 返回 >>>more Path of thinking: • Is it necessary to improve our body language? • What should we do with the five aspects of our body language?

  15. 3. Deduction (演绎法) (Para.6 – 11) Back II. Text Analysis: Main Idea and Devices for Developing It Part I Part III For details Main idea ? The four qualities we can use to impress others:you are the message; be yourself; use your eyes; lighten up Part II (Para.3-14) Devices for developing it ? • Listing (列举法) • (St. 1 of Para.3, 6, 10, 12, as shown above) 2.

  16. 3. Deduction (演绎法) Back to be continued General statement 1 : Be yourself. Specific deduction: Many how-to books advise you to stride into a room and impress others with your qualities. They instruct you to greet them with “power handshakes” and tell you to fix your eyes on the other person. If you follow all this advice. You’ll drive everyone crazy —including yourself.

  17. 3. Deduction (演绎法) Back to be continued The trick is to be consistently you, at your best. (further statement) Specific deduction: The most effective people never change from one situation to another. They’re the same whether they’re having a conversation, addressing their garden club or being interviewed for a job. They communicate with their whole being; the tones of their voices and their gestures match their words.

  18. 3. Deduction (演绎法) Back to be continued General statement 2: Use your eyes. Specific deduction: Whether you’re talking to one person or one hundred, always remember to look at them. Some people start to say something while looking right at you, but three words into the sentence, they break eye contact and look out the window.

  19. 3. Deduction (演绎法) Back General statement 2 : Use your eyes. Specific deduction: As you enter a room, move your eyes comfortably; then look straight at those in the room and smile. Smiling is important. It shows you are relaxed. Some think entering a room full of people is like going into a lion’s cage. I disagree. If I did agree, I certainly wouldn’t look at my feet or at the ceiling. I’d keep my eye on the lion!

  20. II. Text Analysis: Main Idea and Devices for Developing It Part I Part II Main idea ? We all have within ourselves the power to make a good impression. Just be ourselves and we’ll make it. Devices for developing it ? Part III (Para.15) Induction through Questions & Answers (归纳法) Paragraph 15 上一页

  21. II. Text Analysis: Main Idea and Devices for Developing It Take a good hard look at yourself. Do you say “I” too often? Are you usually focused on your own problems? Do you complain frequently? If you answered yes to even one of these questions, you need to lighten up. To make others comfortable, you have to appear comfortable yourself. Don't make any huge changes; just be yourself. You already have within you the power to make a good impression, because nobody can be you as well as you can.
