  2. Childhood: What led to these crimes? • John believed his sister was favored by his father. • Was a peeping tom in high school and spied on the neighbor girl. • Got sexually excited by killing animals. • Also excited by bondage. • Felt he wished he were a girl.

  3. Jobs: • Johns first Job was as a teacher. He was fired for “totally inappropriate behavior.” • Patrolman: after being fired John used his power as a cop to lure girls in to being bonded, raped, and murdered.

  4. Motives: • Schaefer was not sure between the difference in the facts and the fantasies. He used his murders to create stories and artwork that he kept private until his capture.

  5. Hobbies: • Killing animals • Masturbation in women’s panties • Bonding himself to trees • Voyeur • Writing

Facts about John’s Murders • Claims to have killed 30 in his writings • Victims were usually young white teenagers that were also hitchhiking • Would lure them by telling them the dangers of hitch hiking • Kept many things such as teeth of his victims and personal belongings of his victims such as panties

  7. Capture and Trial • Schaefer was captured when two of his abductees escaped • They escaped when he was radioed in to the police station • The girls went straight to the police station and identified Schaefer not knowing he would be there.

Capture and Trial cont. • Schaefer tried to explain by saying he was trying to tech them the dangers of hitchhiking. • After he was fired two other cases came up with similar details. • This was enough evidence to search Johns house. • After doing so they found many things belonging to women who had gone missing along time ago and recently.
