  4. Christopher Columbus • ?1451-1506 • Italian explorer from Venice • Sailed for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain • Landed on the island of Hispaniola near the coast of North America • “Admiral of the Ocean Blue”

  5. Juan Ponce de Leon • ?1460-1521 • Spanish soldier and explorer • Sailed with Columbus • Claimed Florida for Spain in 1513 • Looked for the legendary “Fountain of Youth”

  6. Ferdinand Magellan • ?1480-1521 • Portuguese explorer • Sailed for King Charles I of Spain • First expedition to sail around the world • Died in route • 241 began, only 18 returned

  7. Hernando de Soto • ?1500-1542 • Spanish explorer and soldier • Discovered the Mississippi River for Spain • Explored both North and South America • Died while exploring the Mississippi and buried in it
