  2. For Gold, God, Glory! • New spices in Europe brought the demand for spices up • Europeans try to find new trade routes because they want new sources of wealth

  3. For God and Country! Bartolomeu Dias said: “To serve God and His Majesty, to give light to those who were in darkness, and to grow rich as all men desire to do.”

  4. For Glory Being “the first!” • First to find a spice! • Find an area! • Create a trading port! • Control a country!

  5. They had new technology: New ships which made traveling easier. • 65 Feet Long • Able to explore close to shore • Larger sails for easier movement and power

  6. Maritime technologies • Hartman Astrolabe (1532) Mariner’s compass Maps (portulan) Sextant

  7. Christopher Columbus • Sailed for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain • Discovered land in 1492 • Sailed on 3 ships; Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria • First Europeans to meet people of the Caribbean • Made 4 trips to trade with the West Indies

The Columbian Exchange • The movement of plants, animals, and people between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. • Columbus brought ships filled with European settlers, horses, cows, pigs, wheat, barley, and sugar cane plant to the Western Hemisphere. • Columbus returned to Spain with corn, peanut, potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate, and peppers, beans, and squashes.

  9. Ferdinand Magellan • A Portuguese soldier and sailor who sailed for Spain. • He sailed west around South America, crossed the Pacific Ocean and ended back in Spain. • He named the Pacific Ocean. He said that it looked so “peaceful”. Pacific means peaceful. • His crew made the long trip, but he died before he made it back.
