In just a little over two months, Camp Zone at Southern Highlands will be underway with an “Imaginarium Summer”. This year’s Camp Director is Kacey Rodriguez. Mrs. Rodriguez shares her knowledge with our students in the variety of positions she holds at SHPS: Middle School Science teacher, Science Olympiad Advisor, Science Fair Coordinator, Forensic Science Teacher and JV Volleyball Coach.   2. Spring Track and Field Camp PAC NEWS Activity and Event Committees Now Forming Don’t forget to provide the PAC with your email so you’re informed about all the great PAC activities and events. PAC Meeting Wednesday, April 6, 9:00 AM For information on PAC and how you can volunteer contact shpspac@gmail.com Coach Moore will be sharing his track and field expertise with K – 8 students in a five week skills building camp this month and next on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 3:15 PM – 4:45 PM. Students will learn the following: the art form and the sport of track and field; proper running techniques and skills (long and short distance); various events (broad jump and throws); and set and accomplish goals of the sport. Track attire and water bottles are required: running shoes, shorts and tee-shirt. Participating students will be allowed to wear their SHPS PE clothing to school (including Spirit Shirt) on track and field days. All participating students will be signed in to track camp, and for pick-up require parent/guardian to sign them out from track camp. Students registered for Extended Care will be accompanied to aftercare by a teacher and/or Coach Moore. SHPS will be participating in the 2nd Annual First Good Shepherd Invitational Track Meet at Faith Lutheran on Saturday, May 14th. Camp is a great way to prepare your child for this big sports event! SHPS PAC SPRING CARNIVAL Next month, on Friday, May 6th we will be having the SHPS PAC Spring Carnival. It will be held on the school grounds from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. The planning stages are in the works, and after meeting with our PAC board members it sounds like it’s going to be a wonderful “fun-raiser” for all our students, families and friends! Stay posted for further details including: carnival theme, activities, student tickets and meals available. Spring Carnival is also were we kick-off registration for Summer Camp. Our Camp Zone Director Kacey Rodriguez will be available with info and registrations.

  3. Uniform InfoWith warmer weather on the way and growing children, many parents are in need of purchasing some new uniforms. SHPS school uniforms can be purchased through Campus Club Uniforms. You may call (702) 360-0555 or order online at www.campusclubuniform.com Our school code is SHPS1084. Deliveries will be made to the Upper School office for K – 8 students.A dress code reminder: PE approved clothing is required (SHPS PE shirt, shorts, or sweatpants). Spirit shirts may be worn on PE days and Fridays. AR awarded shirts may be worn any day of the week.Please remember to label all student’s clothing: particularly outerwear. SHPS Science Fair: April 5 & 6 This year’s Science Fair will have all students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 participating, albeit in different ways. K – 2 will have their classroom projects on display in the gym. Grades 3 – 4 will have individual projects on display in the gym and judged by our Middle School Science and Math teachers. Our upper school students in Grades 5 – 8 will have their individual projects on display in the gym, and present them to a panel of outside judges. We believe this differentiated format will allow each student to participate in the Science Fair, and introduce them to the Scientific Method in a manner that suits their own age/grade level. All the displays will be available for parent viewing on Tuesday & Wednesday, April 5 & 6 from 1:00 – 5:30 PM. Middle School students will present their projects to the judges Wednesday, during their regular Science class time. Parents are welcome to attend this as well. Awards will be presented to classes and students on Thursday, April 7th at 9:00 AM. Kindergarten and Eighth Grade Graduation It’s hard to believe that in a short time both our youngest and oldest students will be celebrating their graduation! This month look for information coming home on cap and gown order forms, graduation pictures and graduation dates. The Pottery Shop to Visit SHPS The Pottery Shop will be back at SHPS the second week in April. Students will be able to paint and decorate a variety of Spring and Mother’s Day pottery of their choice. Fliers are available in the office.

Part I: Language Arts: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening If we were asked what students are learning during language arts class, most of us would certainly respond with “reading and writing”! Actually the language arts standards in all states include standards for speaking and listening as well. What exactly do the standards say about what children should know and be able to do in terms of speaking and listening? Let’s explore speaking standards, and we will explore listening next month. In the new National Common Core Standards, the speaking standards state that a first grader would be expected to do the following: Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly. Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation. Notice the increased sophistication in speaking skills that is expected by fourth grade: Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience in an organized manner, using appropriate facts and relevant descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. Differentiate between contexts that call for formal English (e.g., presenting ideas) and situations where informal discourse is appropriate (e.g., small-group discussion); use formal English when appropriate to task and situation. So often we invite families to encourage their children to read and to write at home. Some children have a habit of reading 30 minutes before bed every night. Others love to journal and write, using pens and pencils as well as a keyboard. What can families do to enhance a child’s speaking skills? We can begin by modeling the use of descriptive language when we are speaking. When in conversation, use rich, vivid and lively detail when describing a person, a place or a thing. The use of sensory language allows the listener to visualize the topic. During a meal, take turns choosing a common object in the room or at the table and take turns describing what it looks like, how it smells, how it tastes, how it sounds, or what it feels like. In the car ride home from school, enrich the discussion of “how was your day” with a request to give detail about feelings he or she experienced during the day. The inclusion of complete sentences and formal English in the standards are important as well. As we are more attentive to modeling the use of complete sentences in appropriate situations, the better our children will learn when to use the formal sentence structure as well. As they accompany us on our errands, they will hear, for example, that we use more formal sentence structure when we are speaking to strangers or employees. The same applies when children hear you speaking on the phone. By the lack of formality in your speaking, they will sense that this is someone that you know well. As a parent, just being “aware” can make all of the difference. The skill of speaking clearly, accurately, descriptively, and properly is an essential skill that can be learned both at school and at home. Let’s partner together to make sure that all of our children have the poise and confidence to communicate in a variety of situations both today and throughout the rest of their lives.
