  1. How to make the Brain Book • Cut out cards and separate them into two piles one for outside of the brain and one pile of inside the brain. • You will write a description of the function of each part of the brain on the back of each card as you stack them behind one another. • We are going to do the outside of the brain first. • Find the cerebrum and place it behind the main card that says outside of the brain. -the cerebrum is the largest part of the brain, it receives messages form the spinal cord via the brain stem, from the cerebellum and from nerves that enter the brain directly, such as those from the eyes, ears, nose, and tongue.

  2. How to make the Brain Book • Place the seeing card behind the cerebrum. -The seeing center tells us what we see, what colors we distinguish, and helps us judge distances. • Place the hearing card behind the seeing card. -Hearing center tells us what we hear • Place the tasting card behind the hearing card. -Tasting center tells us what we are tasting, sweet, salty, spicy. • Place the smelling card behind the tasting card. -Smelling center tells us what we smell • Place the touching card behind the smelling card. -Touching center tells us what we touch or what is touching us, and where pain is coming from

  3. How to make the Brain Book • Place the motor card behind the touch card. -Motor is made of bands of nerves on each hemisphere of the brain that controls skeletal muscle • Place the speech card behind the motor card. -Speech center helps to coordinate the muscles we use when we speak. • Place the cerebellum card behind the speech card. -Cerebellum helps coordinate muscles so they work together smoothly when we move, sit, etc. The cerebellum receives signals from the skeletal muscles and joints and sends signals to the cerebrum which controls those muscles. • Place the brainstem card behind the cerebellum • Brain stem helps control breathing, digestion, swallowing, coughing, sneezing and it can speed up or slow down the heartbeat • Place the card that says inside of the brain behind the brainstem card.

  4. How to make the Brain Book • Place the Thalamus, Pituitary and Hypothalamus behind the inside of the brain card. -Thalamus sorts signals arriving from below and relays them to the part of the cerebrum they should go -Hypothalamus helps control body temperature, thirst, hunger, sleep, and water balance. It also links to the endocrine system, the master gland of this system is the pituitary gland • Place the cerebrum behind the Thalamus. • Place the cerebellum behind the cerebrum. • Place the Brain Stem behind the Cerebellum.
