  1. Cells through the ages Made for you by Erin Spruill 

  2. What is a cell? http://web.jjay.cuny.edu/~acarpi/NSC/images/cell.gif http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/images/sickle_cell_image_1.jpg

  3. Scientific Method • Science is never final. • What you learn today, might be different than what your children learn in the future. http://culturesofscientificrevolutions.wikispaces.com/space/showimage/graphical_scientific_method_1.jpeg

  4. http://www.biorap.org/pix/photo_sungraph.gif

  5. Cell theory • The Cell TheoryCells are the basic units of life for all organisms. • 1. All living things are composed of one or more cells.2. Cells are organisms' basic units of structure and function.3. Cells come only from existing cells.

  6. ANAXIMANDER • Greek in the 6th century B.C. • Ionian Islands • Primary thoughts of concepts of evolution • Sea creatures forced to come ashore, and evolved land creatures. http://www.pytheas-travel.gr/map/eptanese-islands/images/ionian.slands.jpg www.wikipedia.com

  7. THEATOMISTS • Democritus (460 - 370 B.C.) - most noted of group of Greek philosophers • Followed Anaximander's view of evolution. • Credited as father of atomic theory “if you have nothing, nothing may be created out of it.” http://admin.satyacenter.com/item_files/article_273_2.jpg

  8. ARISTOTLE (384 - 322 B.C.) • Known for experimental approach and dissections. • Went from animal classification to connection b/w soul and body. • One of his famous thoughts hints genetic concepts: "It is evident that there must be something or other really existing, corresponding to what we call by the name of Nature. For a given germ does not give rise to any random living being, nor spring from any chance one, but each germ springs from a definite parent and gives rise to a predictable progeny. And thus it is the germ that is the ruling influence and fabricator of the offspring." Aristotle’s school in Mieza schoolhttp://www.livius.org/a/1/greeks/aristotle_school.jpg

  9. THEMICROSCOPE http://www.iastate.edu/Inside/2002/0315/beranscope.jpg • Major step for biology • Galileo credited with its invention • telescope http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0110/galileo_sustermans_big.jpg

  10. Microscope magicians Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680 ) • One of first to observe microbes via microscope • Reported plague was caused by microorganism • Suggested effective measures to prevent spread of disease Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) • discovered bacteria, protists, sperm cells, blood cells, microscopic nematodes, rotifers, & much more • Made many microscopes http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/GIFs/protists.jpg

  11. ROBERTHOOKE(1635 - 1703) • English naturalist coined the term "cell" after viewing slices of cork through a microscope. • Latin word cella which means "storeroom" or "small container". • Documented his work in the Micrographia (1665). http://www.its.caltech.edu/~atomic/snowcrystals/earlyobs/micrographia.jpg

  12. JEAN-BAPTISTE DELAMARCK(1744 - 1829) • Mostly animal classification & evolution theories • Famous for this thought: "Every step which Nature takes when making her direct creations consists in organizing into cellular tissue the minute masses of viscous or mucous substances that she finds at her disposal under favorable circumstances."

  13. René (Joachim Henri) Dutrochet(1776-1847) • 1824 - found that: • "the cell is the fundamental element in the structure of living bodies, forming both animals and plants through juxtaposition." http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ae/Dutrochet.jpg

  14. Robert Brown (1773-1858) • first sightings of internal action in 1827 • Brownian movement • zigzag random movement of microscopic particles suspended in liquid or gas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Brown_(botanist)

  15. Johannes Muller (1801-1858) • created connections between biology and medicine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mueller.Joh..jpg

  16. Matthias Schlieden (1804 - 1881) • Says animals are composed of cells • Founder of information that made up cell theory, but did not create the term http://www.biologie.uni-hamburg.de/b-online/e01/schleide.htm

  17. Theodor Schwann (1810-1882) • Brown’s student • Created the term "cell theory" and declared that plants were made of cells. http://home.tiscalinet.ch/biografien/biografien/schwann.htm

  18. BIOGENIC LAW • Rudolf Virchow (1821 - 1902) • Announced that "every cell comes from a cell". http://io.uwinnipeg.ca/~simmons/1115/cm1503/celltheory.htm

  19. Cellular reproduction • 20 years later, the ideas of cellular reproduction were developed. http://mrskingsbioweb.com/images/mitosis.jpg

  20. What is new today?? • ultrastructure http://www.biosci.ohio-state.edu/~plantbio/osu_pcmb/images/Faculty/Meier/Fig4Lrg.jpg

  21. QUESTIONS?

  22. What do you think? Please write at least 2 paragraphs about: • One new fact or idea you learned today. • How do you think science will change in your lifetime? http://www.jiskha.com/images/subjects/english/writing.gif
