  7. Summary Buck was living in Judge Miller’s house in Santa Clara Valley. He ruled over the Judge’s property and house like it was his kingdom. The judge was Buck’s partner, and while he never exactly showed Buck love, he did show him a certain amount of kindness, and Buck was happy and content with his life. Manuel was a gardener on the Judge’s property and he has a love for gambling. He kidnapped and sold Buck for one hundred and fifty dollars. Buck woke up in a cage and saw a man in a red sweater. Furious he attacked the man who then beat Buck viciously with a club. When Buck realized his attack was futile, he submitted and in this experience he developed both a respect and a fear of humans and their weapons. He is bought, along with Curly, by two men named Francois and Perrault, who are mail carriers in the Yukon. They are taken to their new maters’ camp and it is there that Curly gets in a fight with another dog. Buck is surprised when pack of dogs circle the two fighters and shocked when the dogs attack the loser, Curly, and eat her alive. This is Buck’s first real lesson in the laws of the wild. Buck joins a team of dogs lead by a fearsome dog named Spitz, who has profound hatred of Buck. They are driven by Francois and Perrault. While at first he is the slowest dog because of his inexperience, he eventually becomes stronger and learns how to run a sled, and becomes one of the best dogs on the team.

  8. Summary One day, a bunch of wild dogs join the sled team in chasing a rabbit, with Buck and Spitz leading the pack of chasing dogs. They both reach the rabbit at the same time, and as Spitz kills the rabbit, Buck attacks him, beginning a fight to the death. Buck emerges from this fight victorious and the new team leader. With Buck at the lead the team makes a much quicker pace, breaking the records for the trails they navigate. This is not that last though, as Buck and his teammates are sold to three new humans. Hals, Charles, and Mercedes become the new owners of the team. They know nothing of sled dogs or the Yukon, and at the first day they over pack their sled so much that the dogs cant even move it. When they finally get moving, they travel at a slow unsteady pace. A few weeks into the journey the dogs start to die of both exhaustion and starvation, and by the time the reached the other camp, only 5 dogs were left. None of them were in the condition to keep going. When the dogs refused to move the sled Hal started beating Buck, clubbing him to within an inch of his life, until John Thornton threatens Hal and takes Buck from him. With Buck gone the rest of the dogs slowly started moving the sled, which soon fell into the ice, killing the rest of the team and their owners'

  9. Summary With John Thornton and his new master, Buck had experienced something he had never known before; love. Thornton was at the time recovering from and injury, and when he finally recovered, he took Buck and his other dogs in search for a valley filled with gold. They found the valley and stayed there for weeks, mining thousands of dollars worth of gold every day, while Buck started to gain interest in the wolves who lives near by in the valley. Eventually he befriended one of them and often went hunting with him. After one of these hunting trips, Buck returned to the camp to find John Thornton and the other dogs recently murdered by Indians, who were still there. Buck killed several of the Indians and caused the rest to flee. He then finally gave into the call of the wild, joined the pack of wolves and ran at the head of the pack.
