  1. Ohlone College Policy on Academic Dishonesty “Academic dishonesty defrauds all those who depend upon the integrity of the College, its courses and its degrees and certificates.”

  2. “Faculty should make every reasonable effort to foster honest academic conduct.” • Exams should be appropriately proctored or monitored. • Exams and answers to exams should be secured. • It is the faculty member’s responsibility to take appropriate action if there is evidence of academic dishonesty.

  3. “Students at Ohlone College have the right to know what constitutes academic dishonesty in each course in which they are enrolled.” • Inform students of the ethical standards required in your courses and the appropriate procedures for class work and exams. • If feasible, this information should be presented in the course outline (green sheet) and/or on examination questionnaires…or at least reference the policy…. • Inform students of the consequences of violation of these standards, student rights of appeal and procedures.

Definitions of Academic Dishonesty • Cheating • Copying from other’s work (I.A.1) • Submitting previously presented work (I.A.2) • Non authorized materials (I.A.3) • Altering/Interfering with grading (I.A.4) • Exam by surrogate (I.A.5) • Any other defrauding or misrepresenting act (I.A.6) • Plagiarism • Representing the written work of another as one’s own (I.B.1) • Representing the artistic/scholarly work of another as one’s own (I.B.2)

II.Student Evaluation and Reporting • Staff must advise the student of the allegations (II.1) • Use a private setting • Notes and conversations to be confidential • Written report can be sent to the Vice President, Student Development and Division Dean at instructor’s discretion (II.2) • Failed attendance of scheduled conference by student will not stop proceedings (II.3)

Sanctions • Academic Sanctions • Oral Reprimand (III.A.1) • Failure in evaluation (paper or exam) (III.A.2) • Reduced course grade – possible failure (III.A.3) • Refer for administrative sanctions (III.A.4) • Faculty discretion (III.A.5) • Sections I.A.1-3, I.A.6, and I.B.1 • Recommended Academic Sanctions (III.A.6) • Reduction in course grade/possible failure (I.A.1-3, I.B.1, III.A.2-3) • Referral to Vice President, Student Development (I.A.4-5, III.A.5)

Sanctions cont. • Administrative Sanctions (III.B) • California Administrative Code, Sanction 41301, stipulates that cheating or plagiarism may warrant expulsion, suspension, probation, or a lesser sanction • Administrative action involving academic dishonesty is the responsibility of the Vice President, Student Development, who will respond to: • Referrals from the faculty • Flagrant violations • Repeat violations

Protection of (Students’) Rights (read Due Process) • Academic sanctions may be appealed in accordance with college policy (IV.1) • When suspension or expulsion is recommended the student has a right to a formal, impartial hearing by Ohlone College Student Conduct Board (Education Code 66017) (IV.2)

  10. V. Dissemination of Information • Policy shall be published in General Catalog and copies made available in all areas on campus (V.1) • Dissemination of information shall be the responsibility of the Vice President, Student Development (V.2) • Vice President, Student Development will submit annual statistics to Faculty Senate (V.3) • A representative may be designated for all matters in this policy (V.4)
