  1. 4th and 5th Grade OrientationVaughan ES2012-2013 Building Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships

  2. What does departmentalization mean at Vaughan? • Two pairs of classroom teachers will work together to teach all of the subjects • Sample Schedule: Teacher A teaches Math Block to Class A in AM Teacher B teaches Literacy Block to Class B in AM Students swap in PM Teacher A teaches Math Block to Class B in PM Teacher B teaches Literacy Block to Class A in PM

  3. Research says… • Teachers concentrate on two content areas and share responsibility of students for grade levels 3-5- Steve Barkley/KSU 2007-2009: • Changing both teachers and classrooms does not give rise to behavior problems, and students have an opportunity to reap the benefits of different teaching styles-Hood, L: (2010) "Platooning" instruction. • Shared responsibility in all content areas • Quality of teaching improves/specialization • Teachers will deliver the new Common Core curriculum with more rigor because they can “dig in” to the curriculum because of the specialization. • Transition to middle grades smoother • Reduces instructional monotony & academic limitations • More engaging lessons/depth of lessons • Deeper understanding for students

  4. The KEY to Success… • Communication • Fall Conferences will be held with the homeroom teacher (unless otherwise requested) • All general communication will be held with the homeroom teacher unless relevant to a specific subject. • Building Relationships • Personal relationships with students and parents are built • Morning Meetings • Know the students’ approaches to learning • Collaboration • Building collaboration among teachers-instructional teams • Teacher pairs will plan together and set an assessment schedule to avoid numerous tests on one day. • Teacher pairs will plan together and understand homework expectations for each class. Per our handbook, homework should only be taking the time allotted for each grade level and shall not exceed 40 or 50 minutes. Occasionally, students may need to study for a test or work on a project. • Classroom expectations will be set by the pair of teachers …between students, parents, and teachers.

  5. Things to know for Vaughan • Cobb has implemented Common Core standards in math and language arts • Each student will have two teachers- 1) Language Arts 2) Mathematics • Teachers will share Social Studies and Science by either integrating the curriculum or direct teaching • One of the teachers will be your child’s “Homeroom Teacher” • We encourage children to read 20 minutes a night. • The ____th Grade standard is _______ number of books in the school year (____ pages=1 book). • A newsletter will be sent weekly. • Volunteers: We are looking for parents to assist in our classroom with our reading and math centers. • Absences- Students will be responsible for checking with each teacher about the work that was missed. A “While You Were Out” form will be provided to each student with the work missed. • We will be preparing students for 5th grade and/or middle school by working on organizational skills and learning how to be more efficient with their time. • Transition Time • Forgetting Items

  6. New Grading/Report Card for 2012/2013 • Vaughan is a pilot school for the PINNACLE grading and report card program again this year. • Grades will be updated by teachers weekly and available to view online (overall scores, not specific standards as in 3rd grade). • Electronic Report Cards will be completed and sent home at the end of the nine weeks • Logins will be available for pickup, with your ID, at Open House (August 28).
