What is Dual Credit? • Dual Credit are courses offered through Grayson County College that qualify for college credit and high school credit. • Students enrolling in dual credit courses must receive prior approval by Pottsboro High School. • Not all Dual Credit courses that GCC offer are approved for enrollment by Pottsboro High School.

  3. What courses are approved by PHS? • Academic Courses: • English 1301 and 1302 • U. S. Government 2305 and Macroeconomics 2301 • Algebra 1314 and Statistics 1342 • Biology 1306 and 1307 • US History 1301 and 1302 • Technical Courses: • Accounting • Advanced Welding • Business • Computer Aided Drafting • Computer Maintenance • Cosmetology • Culinary Arts • Emergency Management Training/ EMT • Finance • Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning/HVAC • Law Enforcement • Teacher Education and Training

Academic Courses • Requirements: • English 1301/1302 TAKS ELA 2200 with a 3 writing score • Government 2305/Econ 2301 TAKS ELA 2200 with a 3 writing score • US History 1301/1302 TAKS ELA 2200 with a 3 writing score • Biology 1306/1307: TAKS ELA 2200 with a 3 writing score • College Algebra 1314 and Statistics 1342 TAKS Math 2200 Or students may use ACT: English 19, Math 19, Composite 23 SAT: English 500, Math 500, Composite 1070 If your student does not have these scores, they can take the THEA Quick Test to see if he/she may qualify . Recommendationsfor taking the academic college courses: • Students need to be on the Distinguished Graduation Plan • Students need to have taken PAP/AP courses to prepare for the rigor. • GPA of 3.0 or higher

Technical Courses • Requirements: • Business Courses TAKS ELA 2200 with a 3 writing score and TAKS Math 2200 • Programming TAKS ELA 2200 with a 3 writing score and TAKS Math 2200 • EMPS TAKS ELA 2200 with a 3 writing score and TAKS Math 2200 • Accounting Courses TAKS ELA 2200 with a 3 writing score • Drafting TAKS ELA 2200 with a 3 writing score • Education TAKS ELA 2200 with a 3 writing score • HVAC • Welding • Cosmetology • Computer Maintenance • Criminal Justice Or students may use ACT: English 19, Math 19, Composite 23 or SAT: English 500, Math 500, Composite 1070 If your student does not have these scores, they can take the THEA Quick Test to see if he/she may qualify. Recommendations for taking the technical college courses: • Make sure that you have enough elective credits for the graduation plan you are on. If you do not have enough “other” elective courses, it is not recommended that you take these courses. • Students must be self-disciplined and be willing to spend time on homework and studying outside of school.

Times Classes are Offered • 7:30 am-8:45 M-R • English 1301/1302 • Government 2305/Economics 2301 • 10:30-11:15 M-R • History 1301/1302 • 1:00-2:15/2:30/2:45 M-R • English 1301/1302 • Government 2305/Economics 2301 • All Technical Courses • 6:00-9:00 pm Monday Night • Math 1314/1342 • On-line/Internet • Biology 1306/1307 Labs are on-line as well

  7. Scheduling • Academic Courses • English 1301/1302 and Gov2305/Econ 2301 have to be taken together. They are double blocked. • M-TH: 7:30- 8:45 am • M-TH: 1:00-2:15 pm • Technical Courses • Courses are double blocked, must be taken together. • M-TH: 1:00-2:15, 2:30, or 2:45 pm • Cosmetology lasts until 5:00pm. If a student plans to take both academic and technical courses, academic courses will be at 7:30 am and technical courses will be at 1:00 pm. If you are in boys Athletics, that is a conflict.

  9. Grades • If a student fails a course in the fall, they will not be enrolled in dual credit for the spring. • For a course to qualify for an advanced measure (Distinguished), the student must make a 80 or higher. • PHS requires a 70 or higher for credit. GCC requires a 60 or higher for credit. If a student elects to drop a dual credit course prior to the semester, you will be placed in a high school course and the dual credit grade (passing or failing) will transfer to the your new course.

  10. Dual Credit “Credit” What colleges and universities accept dual credit course credit? • Any Texas public university will accept the academic dual credit. • Southeastern Oklahoma University will accept the academic dual credit. • Most out of state and private colleges will not accept academic dual credit. And if they accept it, it may not be for full credit. Please check with the school that you plan to attend.

  11. Cost and Payments • Each Dual Credit course cost is approximately $180.00 . This does not include books, materials, and fees. • Students must register and pay for courses prior to PHS schedule pick-up in August to have the GCC Dual Credit Courses listed on the PHS schedule. • Fee Waivers- • Free Lunch-: Tuition is waived • Reduced Lunch: Tuition is 50% • Must be listed for the lunch program in the prior school year to qualify. • The waiver will only cover up to 3 courses per semester.

  12. Workload • Academic Courses: • Students are required to complete assignments outside of class. Very seldom is late work accepted. • If you are involved in UIL activities, you may want to consider the time you have to successfully complete the dual credit course work. • Technical Courses: • Clinicals, off-campus and out of school commitment.

  13. FERPAFamily Educational Rights and Privacy Act • GCC instructors consider your student a “college” student. They will not discuss your students grades, attendance, etc. • Campus Connect Account • You may access your students’ information by using their user id and password.

  14. Graduation • If a dual credit course that your student is taking qualifies as a required credit for graduation and he/she does not earn the credit, he/she will not participate in graduation ceremonies.
