LPI Goal and Objectives VISION GOAL To assist member states in the implementation of the AU Declaration on land issues and challenges in Africa in accordance with the Framework and Guidelines on Land Policy in Africain order to achieve socio-economic development, peace and security, and environmental sustainability OBJECTIVES • Advocacy for land policy development, implementation and monitoring • Raising awareness • Building synergies, partnerships and resource mobilization • Facilitating capacity development and technical assistance • Promoting knowledge generation, lesson sharing and networking • Supporting monitoring and evaluation of land reforms

FAO- VG on Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests Aim How: Key areas of intervention Program Development Support to member States Awareness raising Capacity development • Promote food security and sustainable development by improving secure access to land, fisheries and forests and protecting the legitimate tenure rights of millions of people, many of whom are poor and food insecure • Advisory service • Monitoring and Evaluation • Partnerships

Building a partnership for F&G-VG Application • Conceptual linkages • F&G: more effective land policies in Africa • VG: governance of tenure of various natural resources (also fisheries and forestry) • Similar principles: equity, information, transparency, gender, customary rights, investments, markets, effective land administrations and institutions • Supportive processes • six collaboration (i) between FAO technical divisions and the Land Policy Initiative LPI • FAO supporting and contributing to the process of preparation and elaboration of the FG ; • LPI Secretariat support to Group of African Ambassador reps to FAO in VG negotiations ensured in-built synergies between F&G and VG

Building a partnership for F&G-VG Application/2 • ownership and legitimacy • VG and FG have complementary; non-competing status. • FG developed thru African owned process---commitment thru a Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges in Africa, • FG Derive legitimacy from AU Assembly Declaration, among other things. • VG document reflects global consensus among the 96 countries and other stakeholders under the Committee on World Food Security (CFS). • AU Declaration mentions « the need for strong systems of land governance rooted in principles of sustainability ..»
