  1. Welcome to Biotechnology 2nd Period – Mr. Young Please pick up the materials on the table, look around if you’d like, and find a seat

  2. What you will hopefully gain from this Biotechnology: • A general knowledge of the goals and functions of the biotechnology industry — “The Big Picture.” • Experience with the processes used in the biotechnology industry, including experimental design, use of scientific equipment, data analysis and interpretation, critical thinking, and communication. • The development of good business practices, organizational skills, and self-reliance.

  3. Who is Matt Young • 7th year teacher, 6th year at Consol • Graduated A&M with a B.S. in Biology in 2006, and worked on a masters/PhD in Neuromuscular Physiology before running out of money and becoming a teacher. • I’ve worked in Biochemistry, Neuromuscular Physiology, and Immunology Labs at Texas A&M University.

  4. Who is Matt Young • I will treat you as adults, as that is how I expect you to act (aka, I don’t want to have to call home about poor behavior) • Anything you tell me in confidence will stay that way.

  5. Who is Matt Young ….and I’m a little dyslexic

  6. If you or your family has a problem with me: • Chain of Command: • First talk to me (Mr. Young) • Then my department head: Charlotte Wiggins • Then our department principal: Gwen Elder

  7. I also need one or two lab managers: • You would assist in making all media for labs • General lab prep & lab clean up • You will gain skills in lab equipment use • Best if you are detail-oriented and/or a little OCD

  8. What to Expect • Have your teachers talked with you about the new “Walk-through” procedures? • Multitasking • Change in retesting scoring

  9. My Scholarship • “AMCHS Scholarship for the Preservation of Natural Resources” • $1,000 • Some of the most important issues facing us as a species have to do with destruction of habitat, global climate change, and extinction of species. • My goal is to see more students pursue degrees in Marine Biology, Oceanography, or Natural Resource Management

  10. What you need to Buy/Bring • Bring one or more of the following to help out with the class (if you can): • Hand Sanitizer • Kleenex

  11. Emergency Drills • Shelter in Place • Fire Drill – Taking attendance • Hazardous weather

  12. What are you expecting to get out of the course: • On a note card, answer the following questions (you don’t have to put your name on the card) • Why did you sign up for this course? • What do you hope to learn? • From what you’ve learned from prior science teachers, what I can do to make this the best class possible? • What have you enjoyed about prior science courses? • What have you hated about prior science courses?

  13. Now About You • Tell me something interesting about yourself to help me remember you

  14. What we will be covering… 1st Semester 2nd Semester • Introduction to Biotechnology • The Cell • Lab Procedures • DNA & Genetics • DNA Technologies • Proteins • Plants • Agricultural Biotechnology • Advanced Lab Procedures • Genetic Engineering • Medical Biotechnology • Animal Biotechnology • Regulations & Ethics This course is still a work in progress…. All is subject to change!

  15. General Classroom Procedures • Follow instructions the first time that they are given. • Be in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings. You must bring notebooks, pen, pencil, & paper. • Refrain from disruptive talking and behavior.  Wait to be recognized before speaking.

  17. Tutorial Times:

  18. Lab Make ups: • You MUST reschedule each lab to make up with me. • We have several labs each week and they must be done in order. • Please try not to be absent on lab days. This will make it harder on you and your lab partner (communication). • Please email me when you are absent to reschedule any missed labs.
