  3. Step Up To Writing: ESSAY • YELLOW: SLOW DOWN! • Is the topic sentence of each body paragraph • Gives the reader a main reason that supports the thesis statement • Includes transition words/phrases • next…another…furthermore

  5. Step Up To Writing: ESSAY • Pinks: While you’re stopped let’s have a chat • Explains the red in even more detail • After the “red” sentences you have “pink” sentences • Detail, fact, example, anecdote, quote, description, fact, statistic, definitions, simple dialogue

  6. Step Up To Writing: ESSAY • GREEN: GO BACK! • Part of the concluding paragraph – the last paragraph • Reminds the reader of the topic but is said in a different way • NO NEW INFORMATION EVER, EVER GOES IN THE CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH

  7. Basically… • Green – Go ahead, introduce your topic • Slow down, now…tell me a little more or give me a reason why • Stop! Really? Can you give me a reason, detail, fact, example to prove what you just wrote? • Screeching halt…holy smokes, I can’t believe what you just wrote…tell me more! • This is called “Pinking it up” and is another detail, fact, example that tells even more about the red • Now, what was this about again? And why should I care?

  8. Practice • Look at the “Cat” essay on your notes • Indicate the green, yellows, reds and pinks in paragraphs 1 and 2 • Use colored pencils • Crayons • Markers/highlighters • Label with a little Y, R and P

  9. In the first place, people enjoy the companionship of cats.Many cats are affectionate. They will snuggle up and ask to be petted, or scratched under the chin. Who can resist a purring cat? If they're not feeling affectionate, cats are generally quite playful. They love to chase balls and feathers, or just about anything dangling from a string. They especially enjoy playing when their owners are participating in the game. Contrary to popular opinion, cats can be trained. Using rewards and punishments, just like with a dog, a cat can be trained to avoid unwanted behavior or perform tricks. Cats will even fetch!
