The Cold War profoundly affected Cuba, positioning it at the center of U.S.-Soviet tensions. The Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 marked a pivotal moment, as Cuba became a Soviet "client state" just 90 miles from Florida. In response to U.S. nuclear missiles in Turkey, the Soviet Union deployed missiles in Cuba, bringing both superpowers to the brink of nuclear war. After intense negotiations and pressure, the Soviet Union agreed to withdraw their missiles. This crisis highlights the complex dynamics of U.S. foreign policy and the risks of nuclear confrontation.
