  4. Remember this is the real world • Very few “have it all” • And it may be that their all is not enough/the same for you • Rarely get anything without effort • Yes, even more effort than you put in already!

  5. General ideas to common wishes • Show you are serious • Do a good job now • Ordinary work • Extras • Show willing, keenness to learn • Ask for what you want • With appropriate research and backup

  6. Training • Ask for what you want • Take all you can get • Don’t be too focussed or rule too many things out • Make sure boss knows • CPD Scheme good way to do it • Win prizes! • Join professional body • BCS, ACM, IITT

  7. ITSS Stuff – mainly free! • Seminars • Induction workshop • Talks • Demonstrations • Specials • Exhibition • Conference • Talk to colleagues • Esp if they are doing a job you fancy

  11. How do I find out? • ITS3 and ITSSG web pages • OUCS and OUDCE web pages • Local newspapers • IT Press • Sign up to mailing lists, scatter your card at exhibitions, etc. • More junk but more offers too!

  12. But I haven’t got time … • Genuinely overworked? • Or could work more efficiently? • Up to you to decide!

  13. OK, maybe I could be more efficient • Why/how? • Obstructions from others? • What could change to help you • Discuss it • Fondness for long lunches, late starts, browsing web? • Accept and be happy • Change

  14. Greater efficiency! • Work out own preferences • Morning/evening person • Pressing deadlines/get over and done with • Time management courses • Several if need be!

  15. Efficient but overworked • You do not have to carry the world on your own! • Beware guilt trips • Bosses must recognise overwork and eliminate • Note hours, jobs worked on, hours, etc. • Put to your boss

  16. But my boss … • Won’t believe you? • I’ll back you up (as long as you convince me first  • Says no money for more staff • Negotiate what you should stop doing • Have to be hard nosed • Affects your life, your health • Assertiveness training may be useful!
