  3. The History of Career Development • Loyalty and job security have disappeared. The new partnership relationship between employer and employee, which is reportedly replacing the old parent-child relationship, emphasizes worker employability. In partnership relationship employers provide employees with opportunities for career and skill development and employees take advantage of the opportunities they are given to enhance their skills, market ability, and potential for continued employment.

  4. Career Development Today • Career development in the education and training of youth and adults must move to new levels to keep up with work place developments. Creative thinking and problem solving may have a new focus as workers strive to navigate through new and uncharted employment practices.

  12. YMCA of America • The YMCA is an excellent organization to work for because they provide opportunities for continued career development and have established the fact that they promote from within

  13. Required Trainings • The YMCA requires only two training when employed there: • New employee training • Child abuse prevention training • There are many other trainings offered so career development continues if the employees are interested

  14. Association of Professional Directors • Many YMCA employees are members of APD (Association of Professional Directors) • The APD is a professional network group for YMCA staff to enjoy fellowship and share career opportunities with colleagues across the country

  15. YMCA University? • Does the YMCA have a real university all its own???

  16. YMCA University-Springfield • Not exactly • The YMCA enjoys a special relationship with Springfield College in Springfield Massachusetts. • Springfield College provides unique training devoted to working at the YMCA

  17. Springfield • The partnership between the YMCA and Springfield College offers a broad range of educational programs at undergraduate and graduated levels • Many executives go to Springfield to further their growth as directors and to seek out new employment opportunities for their employees

  20. Dungarvin • Dungarvin is a group of privately owned corporations currently operating residential and employment services throughout the nation. Dungarvin was founded in 1975 for the purpose of providing supports and services to people with developmental disabilities.

  21. New Employee Training • When hired to work for Dungarvin an employee will receive paid training for in several areas • Paid training is a wonderful incentive to advance your knowledge and career

  22. Training • The required trainings include: • First Aid • CPR • Community Fire Safety • OSHA • Dungarvin will pay for additional trainings depending on specific program needs

  23. Promotions • Additional training in administration, medication distribution and nutrition result in promotions and higher pay • Annual training is a regulatory requirement

  24. Chileda Habilitation Institute • Chileda offers many opportunities for career development. • Program Assistants are on a level system. • To move through the levels, they are required to attend numerous in-services and workshops.

Who Can Help with Career Development? • The National Career Development Association (NCDA) has long been active in developing professional statements to guide consumers of career services, career providers, publishers, and developers, policy makers, and others. • “This statement was developed by the National Career Development Association, 4700 Reed rd. NCDA Offers Career Counselors • What is a Career Counselor? * A Career Counselor holds a graduate degree in counseling with an emphasis in career counseling. * Career Counselors offer different services depending on their level of competency, setting, client needs, and other factors. * Career Counselors help people make and carry out decisions and plans related to life/career directions.

  30. What do Career Counselors do? • A Career Counselor tailors to the specific needs of the person seeking help.

  31. A Career Counselor will do one or more of the following: • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to help clarify goals. • Administer and interpret tests to access interests, abilities, values, dreams, etc. • Explore activities through assignments and careful planning. • Provide ways to improve decision making skills.
