  1. CAREER DEVELOPMENT IDENTIFYING AND DEVELOPING THE SKILLS NEEDED TO ADVANCE

  2. SOME TIPS FOR ADVANCING GET REALLY GOOD AT THE JOB YOU HAVE RIGHT NOW Master the skills Ask questions Understand not only how a task is done, but why it is done Find out where your job fits into the bigger picture of drug discovery

  3. ASK FOR, OR JUST TAKE ON, ADDITIONAL TASKS OR RESPONSIBILITIES, PARTICULARLY THOSE DONE BY SOMEONE AT A HIGHER LEVEL. Serve on committees Give presentations outside of your own group and eventually, outside of the company Sit on cross-functional teams Understand the bigger picture of drug development

  4. ASK YOUR SUPERVISOR WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO GET PROMOTED Make them get specific. The more information you have, the easier it is to do what they are asking of you.

  5. BE OPEN TO CRITICISM Listen to what your supervisor tells you. This can be difficult to do without getting defensive. Weigh the criticism objectively and if it seems legitimate, do something to change your behavior. Your supervisor is the one who has the power to promote. It makes sense to try to please them.

  6. TAKE CLASSES AND CONTINUE TO LEARN THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER Get a new degree – MBA or PhD Read the latest research Ask people more senior to you lots of questions Go to seminars Make it a goal to learn at least one new thing per day

  7. IMPROVE YOUR COMMUNICATION SKILLS – VERBAL, WRITTEN, AND PRESENTATION SKILLS The higher you go up the corporate ladder, the less hands-on lab work you do and the more negotiating, influencing, & teaching you will do Take English classes, writing skills and presentation skills classes

  8. CROSS-TRAINING IS VALUABLE The more you know, the more valuable you are Be sure to let your supervisor know what you know – “toot your own horn” Cross-train with a colleague whose job you want to learn and who wants to learn yours – stay late or come in on the weekends

  9. NETWORK Broaden your circle of professional contacts Meet new people – even within your own company Learn how other companies are set up and run If you are ever out of work, these are the people who can help you find a new job

  10. JOIN PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND ATTEND THE MEETINGS It is easy to join but harder to break away from work or home activities to attend – get involved Join the Board of Directors or head a committee – a safe place to practice leadership skills Besides SABPA, BIO, BIOCOM, AWIS, ACS, AAPS, etc. are all organizations where you can meet other scientists and expand your network

  11. CONSIDER AVENUES OUTSIDE OF THE NORMAL SCIENTIFIC TRACK Managerial track within R&D Clinical/regulatory Human Resources Business development Sales/Marketing Watch your company’s job postings for opportunities in other areas that you may not have considered

  12. CONSIDER CHANGING COMPANIES Sometimes you just need to leave to get ahead Maybe a mistake you made 2 years ago still haunts you and your supervisor can’t let it go If you’ve done everything I have recommended and you are still not moving up, it may be time to leave

  13. CONSULT A CAREER COUNSELOR IF YOU THINK YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHANGE CAREERS Career counselors can be extremely helpful in transitioning to something new They can give you tests to help you determine the kinds of jobs that would best utilize your skills & abilities And once you know what you want to do, they can help you transition into your new career

  14. FEWER NEW OPPORTUNITIES MORE CHANCES TO HAVE IMPACT AT LOWER LEVELS WEAR MORE HATS MANY JOBS OPEN AT ANY GIVEN TIME VERY HIERARCHICAL NARROWLY FOCUSED DUTIES BIOTECH VS. BIG PHARMA

  15. I’d like to close by saying that if you walk away with anything from my talk it should be that your career development is up to YOU, not your company. You must take on the responsibility for your advancement. It’s hard work and you must be patient. Moving up the ladder too quickly can actually end up stalling your career. You may be set up to fail. You may find yourself in a position that is beyond your capabilities. That higher title and bigger salary come with added responsibilities and a higher standard by which you are judged. You are also at higher risk of losing your job if you do not perform. • My wish for each of you is that you all have very rewarding careers, no matter what level you attain. • Thank you.
