HTSG Report to 802.11 WG • Letter Ballot 55 declared failed, with 68% Yes, and if the LB was procedural, it technically passed. • In any case, the SG processed the comments, and prepared a revised PAR and 5 Criteria • HTSG motion to send PAR and 5 Criteria to SEC passed 75-0-0 Jon Rosdahl, Micro Linear

  5. HTSG Report to 802.11 WG (cont) • 802 rules require that 30 days prior to a plenary that any PAR and 5 Criteria be posted to the SEC members. • Due to the LB declared failed, the other 802 Chairs did not present our PAR to the other WGs • SO Jon Rosdahl, Micro Linear

HTSG Report to 802.11 WG (cont) • If WG supports the PAR and 5 Criteria, then the SEC which has the electronic copy already, will take it up at the July plenary • The SG will need to respond to any comments that are presented by 5:30pm on Tuesday July 22, 2003 by 5:30 Wed.   21. IEEE-SA Standards Board Bylaws on Patents in Standards 6. Patents IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard. This assurance shall be provided without coercion and prior to approval of the standard (or reaffirmation when a patent becomes known after initial approval of the standard). This assurance shall be a letter that is in the form of either a) A general disclaimer to the effect that the patentee will not enforce any of its present or future patent(s) whose use would be required to implement the proposed IEEE standard against any person or entity using the patent(s) to comply with the standard or b) A statement that a license will be made available without compensation or under reasonable rates, with reasonable terms and conditions that are demonstrably free of any unfair discrimination This assurance shall apply, at a minimum, from the date of the standard's approval to the date of the standard's withdrawal and is irrevocable during that period.   35. Criteria 6.1. Broad Market Potential A standards project authorized by IEEE 802 shall have a broad market potential. Specifically, it shall have the potential for: a) Broad sets of applicability. b) Multiple vendors and numerous users. c) Balanced costs (LAN versus attached stations). Jon Rosdahl, Micro Linear

  36. Criteria6.2 Compatibility IEEE 802 defines a family of standards. All standards shall be in conformance with the IEEE 802.1 Architecture, Management and Interworking documents as follows: 802.   38. Criteria 6.3 Distinct Identity • Each IEEE 802 standard shall have a distinct identity. To achieve this, each authorized project shall be:a) Substantially different from other IEEE 802 standards.b) One unique solution per problem (not two solutions to a problem).c) Easy for the document reader to select the relevant specification.   39. Criteria6.4 Technical Feasibility • For a project to be authorized, it shall be able to show its technical feasibility. At a minimum, the proposed project shall show:a) Demonstrated system feasibility.b) Proven technology, reasonable testing.c) Confidence in reliability. Jon Rosdahl, Micro Linear

  40. Criteria6.5 Economic Feasibility • For a project to be authorized, it shall be able to show economic feasibility (so far as can reasonably be estimated), for its intended applications. Approved Scope (75-9-4) • To define standardized modifications to both the 802.11 PHY and the 802.11 MAC so that modes of operation can be enabled that are capable of much higher throughputs, with a target minimum throughput of 100Mbps, as measured at the MAC data SAP.
