  2. Our Committee

  3. Our Process • Three meetings – six hours • Reviewed district scale and practices • Reviewed state law • Reviewed research and history • Gathered student input / community input • Panel discussion

  4. Should 11 pt grading scale continue from CVSD middle schools into the high schools? • Should CVSD eliminate the district-wide grading scale? • Should CVSD revise the 11 pt grading scale from 70–100% to 60–100%?

  5. Current CVSD Grading Scales Current High School Scale (5 pt. / 70 – 100%) 94 – 100% ……… A ………… 4.0 86 – 93% ………… B ………… 3.0 77 – 85% ………… C ………… 2.0 70 – 76% ………… D ………… 1.0 < 70% …………… F ………… 0.0 Current Middle School Scale (11 pt. / 70 – 100%) 96 – 100% ……… A ………… 4.0 94 – 95% ………… A- ………. 3.7 92 – 93% ………… B+ ……… 3.3 88 – 91% ………… B ………… 3.0 86 – 87% ………… B- ……… 2.7 84 – 85% ………… C+ ……… 2.3 79 – 83% ………… C ………… 2.0 77 – 78% ………… C- ……… 1.7 75 – 76% ………… D+ ……… 1.3 70 – 74% ………… D ………… 1.0 < 70% …………… F ………… 0.0

  6. What effect would the 11 pt scale have on students? • Pluses and minuses would offer a broader range in assigning grades • More accurately reflects range of grade distribution

  7. Why would we want to stop using a standard district-wide scale? • Most districts do not use a district-wide standard • Decision is by teacher or by school

  8. Why would we want to retain the present scale (70-100%)? • It is established and communicates a higher standard • It communicates a standard across all grade levels

  9. Why would we want to revise the scale to 60-100%? • Would help more students receive passing grades • Assist more students in achieving industry standards for reduced auto insurance rates • Places our students on a more “even playing field” with 60-100% scale schools for scholarships

  10. Our Recommendations • Should 11 pt grading scale continue from CVSD middle schools into the high schools? Yes Rationale • Approved by state • Consistency across all grade levels • Higher education uses the same system

  11. Our Recommendations • Should CVSD eliminate the district-wide grading scale? No Rationale • Should have a standard that is consistent for all schools in CVSD

  12. Our Recommendations • Should CVSD revise the 11 pt grading scale from 70–100% to 60–100%? Yes Rationale • Most districts have a 60-100% scale • Perception by students and parents that they unfairly compete with other schools

  13. What Should It Look Like? PROPOSED CVSD GRADING SCALE (11 pt. / 60 – 100%) 94 – 100%............. (7)……………… A……………… 4.0 90 – 93%............... (4)…………….. A-……………. 3.7 87 – 89%...............
