  4. Slavery has existed in many parts of the world. • People forced into slavery came from different walks of life. Farmers, merchants, priests, soldiers, or musicians; fathers and mothers, sons and daughters. Intro Between the 1500s and the 1800s millions of Africans were captured, shipped across the Atlantic Ocean, and sold as slaves in the Americas. (North, South & Central America) This is known as the TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE.

  5. The Transatlantic Slave Trade consisted of three journeys: 1. The outward passage from Europe to Africa carrying manufactured goods. 2.The middle passage from Africa to the Americas or the Caribbean carrying African captives and other ’goods for sale’. 3. The homeward passage carrying sugar, tobacco, rum, rice, cotton and other goods back to Europe.

  6. Activity 1 Study this map showing the trans antic slave trade, and answer the question that follow. From what continent were enslaved people taken? Name any 4 countries. What was the destination of the highest number of captive Africans? What was the destination of the second highest number of captives? According to the map, about what percentage of captive Africans was taken to the United States?

  7. Activity 2 1.On your map draw and label the 3 journeys that made up the transatlantic slave trade. 2.Cut and paste your map in your notebook.

  8. Plenary • Draw a triangular diagram and use it to , explain to your partner what is meant by: • The transatlantic slave trade • The outward passage • The middle passage • The homeward passage

  9. Homework Research and print out a picture of the middle passage and paste it in your note book. List 5 things slaves experienced during this part of their journey to the Americas. Write a definition for the term ‘Plantation’.
