Understanding Cell Cycle and Mitosis through Practical Lab Experience

This lab activity aims to enhance your understanding of cellular reproduction by identifying the stages of mitosis in plant and animal cells. You will use onion root tips and compound light microscopes to observe the phases of mitosis, including prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Additionally, you will estimate the duration of these mitotic stages and learn about the differences in cytokinesis between plant and animal cells. By the end, you will have a comprehensive grasp of cell division processes.

  1. Cell Cycle & Mitosis

  2. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this lab is to have a better understanding of cellular reproduction. When complete you will be able to identify animal and plant cells in the different mitotic stages.

  3. METHODS & MATERIALS • Part I: Mitotic Stages. Recognizing the principle stages of mitosis in representative cells using an onion root tip, compound light microscope, and pre-prepared slides. • Part II: Estimating the duration of the respective stages of mitosis in an onion root tip.

  4. Interphase Stages of the cycle during which growth and DNA synthesis occur when the nucleus is not actively dividing. Plant Cell

  5. Prophase Chromosomes condense; nuclear membrane prepares for division. Animal Cell Plant Cell

  6. Metaphase Chromosomes line-up independently in the center. Animal Cell Plant Cell

  7. Anaphase Chromosomes separate and move towards the poles. Animal Cell Plant Cell

  8. Telophase Daughter cells have 1 chromosome from each homologous pair. The animal cell begins to form a cleavage furrow while plant cells construct a new cell wall to divide the new daughter cells . Plant Cell Animal Cell

  9. Cytokinesis Division of cytoplasm after Mitosis . This step only occurs in animal cells. Animal Cell
