  3. Sun Fun Facts • The sun is an average sized star • The sun is 150,000,000 km (93,000,000 mi) from Earth • It takes less than 8.5 minutes for light from the Sun to reach Earth

It is bumpy. • The bumps are caused by gases that rise to the surface and create bulges. • Above the sun’s surface is the atmosphere or chromosphere. • The outermost part of the Sun is the corona. It is only visible during a solar eclipse.

Solar Storms • Storms on the sun are actually magnetic storms. • These storms can disrupt life on earth through satellites and GPS. • Sunspots are dark spots on the photosphere. • Faculae are bright clouds of gas on the photosphere. • Solar Flares are solar storms that explode from the Sun’s photosphere.

Solar Storms cont’d • A solar prominence is a huge stream of gas that extends out past the Sun’s corona and lasts for days. • A solar wind is made up of electrically charged particles from the Sun. The solar wind carries the particles from the Sun to Earth’s Atmosphere. • An aurora is a phenomenon of beautiful colors of light that are caused by the Earth’s magnetic field trapping the charged particles from the Sun
