Jacksonian Democracy • Jackson’s supporters become known as Democrats • Jackson seen as a friend to the common man • Universal white male suffrage
Spoils System • Jackson began the practice of replacing government officials with people who had supported him during the campaign. • Has President Obamausedthe spoils system?
Indian Removal • Whites in the South and Northwest desired more land for farming. • American Indians in these areas still owned large amounts of land. • 1830: Indian Removal Act: relocates Indians to Oklahoma
Trail of Tears • Army forces thousands of Indians off their land. • Indians marched thousands of miles, many die along the way. • What if the government took your land?
Indians Fight Back • Some Indians turn to violence. • Cherokee go to Supreme Court • Worcester v. Georgia: 1832, ruled that the gov. shouldn’t move Indians. • President Jackson: • “John Marshall has made his decision – now let him enforce it.” • Indians removed
Bank War • Jackson hated the BUS • Claimed that it was unconstitutional • Jackson vetoed a bill to re-charter the BUS • Jackson then ordered federal $ out of the BUS and into pet banks. • BUS dies in 1836

Nullification Crisis • South imported a large amount of goods from Europe. • Tariffs drove the price of those imports higher. • Tariff of Abomination • South Carolina Exposition and Protest: Vice President John Calhoun suggests that states nullify the tariff. • SC threatens to secede, or leave, from the US.
