Factors leading Europe to War • Imperialism- A policy in which strong nation seeks to dominate other countries • Nationalism- devotion to one’s nation • “MY COUNTRY IS THE BEST BECAUSE I WAS BORN THERE” • Militarism- A policy of glorifying military power.

Factor One- Imperialism • As European countries started to carve Africa and Asia, competition between European countries for more colonies played a role in propelling Europe into war. RIVALRY
Factor Two- Nationalism • European countries compete to be considered as one of the Great Powers. • Compete to be better than neighboring countries. • Great Britain vs. Germany • Industrial dominance NATIONALISM LED TO SEVERE RIVALRY
Factor Three- Militarism • Nationalism led to competition for better military • To be truly great, must have powerful military • Create tension between countries
Triple Alliance • Rivalries grew in Europe so the solution was forming alliances between European countries • Otto Von Bismarck- Chancellor of Germany • Thought France was threat to peace • Try to isolate France • Robbing France of it’s allies • Triple Alliance- Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy
Triple Entente • Bismarck also make a treaty with Russia • But Kaiser Wilhelm leader of Germany forces Bismarck to resign • Kaiser brakes treaty with Russia • Russia gets mad- make alliance with France • At the same time Germany is jealous of Great Britain’s navy • Germany try to challenge Great Britain • Great Britain feels threatened so join France and Russia, forming Triple Entente
Ottoman Empire Decline • People wanted to break away from Ottoman Empire • Some people did form their own nation • Strong nationalism- wanting to expand boarders and become more powerful
Serbia Vs. Austria • Serbia- want to absorb all the slavs in the Balkans • Russia (slavic population) supported Serbia • However Austria- threatened by serbia’s growth • Solution: Austria, 1908 Annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina (Slavic Regions) • Serbia leaders who wanted to control them= outraged – possibility of war • Russia full support to Serbia which was little • Germany full support to Austria • Serbia had to back down
