  2. Global Citizenship Project • The primary purpose: • Educate students and the college community of global issues and engage them in action to improve the world we live in and to foster a lifelong commitment to global citizenship • Means to an end: • Awareness, • Commitment, • and Engagement

  3. Global Citizenship • Isthe application of the concept of citizenship (social responsibility) at a global level through active participation. • The global citizen is one who is strongly connected with the concepts of globalization (awareness), participates (commitment and engagement) in ways to reduce inequities and refrains from behaviors that hinder the well-being of others.

  4. Global Citizenship Model • The model can be used in class and with clubs to engage students in and outside the classroom. • Simple concept: • The faculty DARES the students to CARE. • Students will discuss global issues as they pertain to their class or student club and through additional opportunities students will seek ways to take action/ get involved.

  5. Intent of Model • Students will have opportunity to discover and discuss global issues • Students given opportunities will be able to investigate potential solutions further (awareness) and develop a plan of action • Students can become actively involved through: • student clubs, • volunteerism or community service, • experiential learning, and • a host of other means.

Global Citizenship Model Faculty and staff engage students in discussion D iscuss global issues (as they pertain to discipline, all disciplines, mission of club…) A ddress potential solutions (Encourages students to brainstorm ideas for feasible solutions) R equire plan of action or further investigation (CARES model assignment) E ncourage student to engage (refer students to clubs, mentors “Global citizenship Council” ) S hare experience (Discuss plans/results of assignments in class- post on class site or vote on the best…, year end awards)

A ct & analyze – Discuss solutions / create plan of action or investigate a non-profit R eact/ reflect – Discuss feasibility of plan/project or reflect on non-profit’s mission and programs E ngage - Connect with mentors/organizations and implement plan of action S ocial Network - Share experience

  8. Global Citizenship Council • Made up of volunteer faculty and staff • Will mentor students to put their plans into action • The Council will have connections to resources, mentors, contacts, etc. to engage and follow the student groups through their implementation phase

Opportunities for Student Action • Create Awareness • Posters/ pamphlets • Presentations • Fundraising • For non-profit • Volunteer • With non-profit • Student Club Activities • Students for Global Peace • Service learning • Formalized program of service (created by faculty) through experiential learning

Potential Global Issues • Children (orphanage, clothes, shoes, school fees, rice, books) • Education (school fees, school supplies, literacy) • Environmental (clean water, waste, energy) • Health care (school fees, training, supplies, ) • Housing • Hunger (food pantry, rice, heifer) • Job skills / Life skills (training videos)
