  4. Two Notorious Convicts • Al Capone (Left Photo) • Chicago’s most famous mob boss • William Sutton (Slick Willie-Right Photo) • One of the most famous bank robbers in American History.

  5. Historic Facts • Opened in 1829 • Closed in 1971 • America’s most historic prison. • Opened during the Industrial Revolution. • America’s 1st penitentiary • Penitentiary- a prison to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts.

Timeline • 1831- First Female Prisoner • 1836- Original penitentiary built. • Cost= $780,000- One of the most expensive buildings during the time period. • 1958- Eastern State Penitentiary becomes historic property. • 1965- Becomes a National Historic Landmark. • 1970- Eastern State Penitentiary closes.

  7. Importance of the Eastern State Penitentiary • Allowed prisoners to reflect upon their decisions as a result of being there in hope of returning them to society. • All prisoners were kept separate from each other.
