  1. Taking a stand

  2. It’s a gallery walk – Yeah!! • You remember the drill— It’s inference making time • You have 1 minute to look at make a comment on each photo. • In your ISN’s create a Notice and Wonder Chart on the left side • List things that you notice that are obvious and list things that make you still wonder. • (e.g., “Child is standing with a sign,” “They are holding a banner”) / (“I wonder why they are serious?” “What are they protesting?” “When was this?”).

  3. Return to your seat • Now lets answer these question as a group: What do all of these photographs have in common? Why are all of these people holding signs? What might be motivating all of these people?

  4. Today’s objective • I can get information from photographs about people who are taking a stand about somethingand explain the advantages and disadvantages of gathering information from photographs.

  5. Question • Based on the photographs you have looked at, what do you think the phrase “taking a stand” means? • What about advantages and disadvantages, what does that mean?

  6. Building Background Knowledge: Taking a Stand • Please look at the posted photographs and your Notice/Wonder Note-catchers. • Try to identify the big idea that the people in the photographs are taking a stand about. • Take a minute to share your ideas with a partner. • Shout out!!

  7. Take a look • draw a line under yourlast entry on your Notice/Wonder Note-catcher. • Look at the SmartBoard at the Little Rock Nine photograph. • Silently look at the photograph and jot down what you notice and what you wonder as you look at this photo. • Then turn and talk to a partner: Who is taking a stand in this photograph? How can taking a stand be a positive and a negative thing? • Shout out!

  8. Taking a Stand: Frayer Model • Take a look at the handout • I’d like you to draw this on the left side of your ISN’s • Make sure that you leave space under as you write because we will keep adding to this.

  9. Examples Box • Look at the Examples box in the lower left-hand corner of the chart. • Reflect on the examples of taking a stand that you viewed in the photographs. Shout out!!

  10. Definition Box • Look at the Definition box in the upper left-hand corner. • Turn and talk about what it means to take a stand. • Shout out!!

  11. Characteristics/Explanation box • Look at the Characteristics/Explanation box in the upper right-hand corner of the handout. • Turn and talk with their partner about the following question: What characteristics or qualities does a person who takes a stand have? Shout out!!

  12. Non-Examples box • Take a look at the Non-Examples box in the lower right-hand corner. • Question: What might a person do that’s the opposite of taking a stand? Shout out!!

  13. Question • reflect on the first learning target (taking a stand). • Please share a detail from the Taking a Stand: Frayer Model handout that helped you to understand what it means to take a stand.

  14. Homework • T-chart: Advantages/Disadvantages handout. Remember that looking at photographs to learn about taking a stand is different from reading about people taking a stand. • A. Write about what you learned from the photographs about taking a stand. • B. Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of learning about taking a stand by only looking at photographs.
