Key Concepts • Geras = a prize of honor, a particularly valuable token of distinction conferred on a warrior by his peers, e.g. Briseis is Achilles’ geras. • Tinê = honor, especially the external, see geras • Kleos = glory or fame; that which others say about one, particularly after one’s death. Kleos is what epic conveys upon its heroes.

  12. Judging a Warrior • What are his strengths, weaknesses? • How well does he measure up to the values of his warrior society? (What are those values?) • Where would you place him in comparison with his fellow warriors. Is this Homer’s ideal? How do you know?
