    4. By far the category of projects that has received the largest share of Grant funds is Playgrounds. This picture shows a new playground completed just last year at Hillandale ES.     7. Since the first Matching Grants Cycle in 1993, the County has awarded $401,693 for 23 playground projects with an estimated completed value of $921,604. This is a playground at E. K.     9. 6 open space projects have been funded with $224,092 of grant funds. The estimated value of the land at the time of the grant applications was $540,195. With Durham County property values constantly escalating, Ill leave it to the experts to put a current market value on these properties.     12. The Associations volunteers created these walking trails on Grant-funded land at Penneys Bend that allow nature-lovers to access parts of the Eno River. The Association proudly acknowledges the contribution made by the County Matching Grants towards their land preservation efforts. Whether a communal space to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers, or an innovative approach to early-childhood play, gardens are fast becoming a popular recreational amenity in urban settings. Matching Grants has funded 6 projects, 3 of which are recent recipients and are ongoing. The total of grants in this category is $84,926, but the value, due primarily to the land values within the City limits is $229,628. A relatively new category of projects is the public garden.     16. The Grant Guidelines allow flexibility in awarding funds for unique recreation projects. Whether a picnic shelter, a recreation facility, a fitness course, or ball field lights, the Matching Grants Program is designed to encourage creative solutions to enhancing the recreation opportunities of Durham County citizens.     17. In summary, the Matching Grants Program has awarded $898,448 in funds over 13 years to 46 recipients. The estimated value of these projects, based on the grant applications, is $2,135,349.     18. The Matching Grants Committee recommendations are to make the program more visible by bringing presentation to civic groups and organizations of all types. Keep the guidelines easy to understand with well defined criteria. Follow-up with regular monitoring during the life of the project to ensure public access, appropriate maintenance and signage. Allow the program to adapt to changing trends in recreation and demographics.The Matching Grants Committee recommendations are to make the program more visible by bringing presentation to civic groups and organizations of all types.     19. In closing, the Board of County Commissioners approved funding for a walking trail in Forest Hills Park back in December. Tonight you have before you the final grant request of the 2004 cycle. The DOST Matching Grants Committee recommends approval of the second and final award of its 2004 Grant Cycle for $49,000 to the SEEDS/Farmers Market Pavilion Project planned to be built in Durham Central Park. In closing, the Board of County Commissioners approved funding for a walking trail in Forest Hills Park back in December. Tonight you have before you the final grant request of the 2004 cycle.
