CONGRATULATIONS!!!! • You’ve just won $500,000!!! • It is important to make a budget so you can spend your money well. • You will be using the internet to help you create a budget for your new money.
How do I do it? • You will use search engines such as Google and various other websites to locate information on pricing of items. • You will use the $500,000 budget to decide how much you can spend on each thing.
What do you need to buy? • Each of you has $500,000. • You have to buy a house. • You have to buy a car. • You have to put some of it in savings.
What do you need to buy? • You have to spend some of it on entertainment or fun things. • You have to buy something that will help you as a deaf individual. • Ex: TTY, Vibrating Alarm, Flashing Lights for House, Sidekick phone. • WHY? Because each of you is deaf or hard of hearing and you need to know how much these things cost and what is available to you!
What do I do with what I find? • After you find an item you wish to purchase, raise your hand and tell the teacher. • The teacher will help you put a picture of your item and the price of it onto a PowerPoint slide.
Then what? • After you have all required items for the Webquest, you will need to make a list of the items you bought and the prices of each. • First do this on your own piece of paper. When it is ready, tell the teach and she will help you put this in your PowerPoint.

Elements of Deafness • Students will be required to work in as part of their budget the purchase of an item that will benefit them as a deaf or hard of hearing individual. While learning about the importance of budget, the students will also learn the different prices for things they will likely purchase in the future. • Not included in this project, but role played the week before was interacting with hearing people at the stores you are purchasing items from. Deaf students will have to know how to interact with hearing people and how to get the items they need when they visit various stores.
Why is this important? • It is important for students to be able to understand how to budget. Even though they are young, it is important to be money-smart. The students are learning lessons about the economy and how spending and saving can contribute. By making a budget they can begin to understand how they can have a part in that.
Higher Level Thinking Skills • Answer critical thinking questions: • How much can I get for my money? • What kinds of things are important to spend money on? What kinds of things should I not spend my money on? • Why is it important to save my money? • How does having a budget help me? • The students are analyzing a budget. • They are internalizing the important concepts of saving and spending. • They are rationalizing the purchases that they have made.
