Indiana’s GQE • State law requires that Indiana high school students must meet the Graduation Qualifying Exam (GQE) requirement in order to graduate. • Based on Indiana’s Academic Standards, the GQE covers: • English/language arts through grade 9. • Mathematics through grade 8, plus Algebra I.

  3. Meeting the GQE Requirement • The GQE requirement can be met by: • Passing the GQE. • Fulfilling the requirements of a GQE waiver option. • GQE waiver options include: • Core 40 waiver • Evidenced-based waiver (AKA “Appeal waiver”) • Work-readiness waiver (NEW)

Statewide GQE Waiver Trends • The statewide average of students graduating with a GQE waiver has remained fairly constant over the years (between 4-6 percent). • The majority of Indiana schools grant relatively few GQE waivers (most below state average). • 2006 statewide waiver average: 5.6 percent

  7. Statewide 2006 Waiver Summary • 63 percent of schools granted fewer waivers than the statewide average of 5.6 percent. • 85 percent of schools had fewer than 10 percent waiver graduates. • 63 schools granted zero waivers.

  8. Statewide 2006 Waiver Summary • 15 percent of schools had greater than 10 percent waiver graduates. • 15 high schools (4 percent) had greater than 20 percent waiver graduates. • High schools with the largest numbers of waiver grads were primarily in urban areas.
