  1. ALTERNATIVE SCHOLARSHIP RESERVATIONS • Program for NJROTC Cadets to gain preselected (reserved) scholarships for NROTC. • 110 Allotted Quotas (10 per NJROTC Area) • Not available for NURSE or MARINE CORPS OPTIONS! • Initial Goal: To increase diversity in ROTC accessions • NJROTC is a nation-wide program with a population that mirrors the local communities. • NJROTC is already owned by CNSTC and can (and does!) provide close coordination of the process • NJROTC has statistically better grades & attendance in high school, and looks like slightly better retention in the ROTC program, therefore predicting higher level of success.

  2. ALTERNATIVE SCHOLARSHIP RESERVATIONS • Considering the imposition of a 1050 SAT threshold, the numbers look good. The lesson here is that we are a diverse organization, and you are doing a good job of stressing advanced educational opportunities to the cadets! • OUT OF 110 STUDENTS SELECTED: • DEMOGRAPHICS - – 65 MALES, 45 FEMALES • 20 AFRICAN AMERICAN • 13 ASIAN • 2 NAT HI/ PACIFIC ISLANDER • 19 MULTIPLE • 52 CAUCASIAN • 4 DID NOT RESPOND • 0 AMERICAN INDIAN/ALASKAN NATIVE • 20 HISPANIC • ACADEMIC MAJORS – TIER 1 – 46 TIER 2 – 50 TIER 3 – 14 • SAT SCORES - 28 > 1410 [1470] Average SAT: 1216 (up from 1113 last year) • 43 = 1310-1400 Average GPA: 3.68 (up from 3.53 last year) • 20 = 1210-1300 • 12 = 1110-1200 • 5 = 1050-1100 [1050] (Spring 2013 data)

  3. AMs: Please Insert School Name and Area (ex: A13) in corner margin Make sure there is a complete address, including city state & ZIP Try to ensure that the mix reflects your Area Demographic. (Ask me if you have doubts.) Make sure the numbers are filled in and make sense. Need GPA, SAT/ACT, Class Rank Try to get them to fill in sports experience of some sort.

  4. Initial the boxes and blanks Don’t forget this one!!!

  5. ASR GRADE SHEET NOTE: Navy Option only, NO Marine Corps or Nurse Insert course NAMES into the blanks! There is a list of possibilities below. Make sure that requirements are met! Leave no blanks! Also, make sure they indicate “Intended Courses” on their NROTC application.

  6. ASR GRADE SHEET

  7. WHAT SNSI’S/NSI’S CAN DO • SAT/ACT • Have cadets enroll and complete njrotc act/sat prep course. • Take test(s) in junior year. Be creative. • 4 ENGLISH & MATH COURSES REQUIRED • Extrapolate courses to be taken in Senior year. • ON-LINE NROTC SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION • Application available 1 April of Junior year. • Have cadets complete NLT early in the SENIOR year. • Ensure recruiter/NRD is receiving and processing required material for scholarship application. • No nurse or Marine Corps options. • CHECK STATUS OF ON-LINE APPLICATION. • Google “NROTC scholarship status.” • Need cadets SSN and birth date.

  8. SNSI’S/NSI’S • Ensure cadets are applying earlyto the five colleges/universities listed on their NROTC scholarship application. Have them think about Cross-towns. • Manage their expectations! Be realistic about school choices. • Don’t let them list schools they can’t get admitted to! • Getting an ASR does not mean you are getting into the college/NROTC unit you selected first. • Earlier selection date this year allowed better placement opportunity. • If cadet receives ASR and is not placed at desired university: • email NROTC OD placement <pnsc_nrotc.placement@navy.mil> and ask to be put on waiting list for desired university.

  9. Important Reminders! • IT ONLY WORKS IF YOU USE IT!! • Don’t be the SNSI who complains when his Honor Roll/NHS/4.2GPA/Super-star CC doesn’t get USNA or NROTC, if you didn’t put him in for ASR in the first place!! --And-- • DON’T SUBMIT THE CADET FOR ASR IF YOU DON’T RECOMMEND THEM FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP!!!!

  10. MSISR • The NROTC Brief covers this in detail but some salient points: • If the cadet is willing to consider HBCU (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) & HHE (High Hispanic Enrollment) • Have them check the block on the NROTC application. Does not eliminate them from national consideration. • or – after the January Deadline up through 30 Jun – print the .pdf file off the NROTC Website and send it to the MSI NROTC PNS. He will contact you for an interview.

  11. MSISR • Like the ASR: • it is Navy only, no Nurse, no Marine Corps. • Take the SAT/ACT prior to deadline • GPA 3.0 • Unlike the ASR: • Top 40% of high school graduating class • 4 years of English, 3 Years Math, 3 Years Natural Science, 2 Years Social Science

  12. Unit Viability • By this time you should realize that it doesn’t pay to be non-compliant in enrollment! But be honest, cooking the books really doesn’t pay!! • Advertise – • Inform the school district, school board, city council, community about what’s occurring in the unit - ASRs, STEM. • Ensure you report your enrollment correctly on 1 October report if 4X4 Block: M+F+New+Returning for Viability Only
