Size and Shape of Earth • Earth’s shape is almost perfectly spherical with it slightly flattening at the poles and bulging at the equator. • Earth’s actual shape is called an oblate spheroid.
Spheres of Earth • All settled in density order with the lithosphere on the bottom and the atmosphere on top. • 1.Lithosphere- includes the solid crust of the earth and the stiffer mantle. Approx. 100km thick. R.T. p.10 • 2. Hydrosphere – a thin layer of water that lies between the lithosphere and atmosphere. • R.T. p.1 • 3. Atmosphere – the shell of gasses that surrounds the earth.
