Overview of Texas Vehicle Inspection and Registration Changes Effective March 1, 2015

EstablishingaSingleExpiration Date • SyncUpYear:March1,2015–February29,2016 • Registrationpermittedifacurrent,passingvehicleinspectionisonrecord(electronicorVIR)atthetimeofregistration. • Example: • VehiclereceivesapassinginspectioninDecember2014.TheinspectionexpiresinDecember2015. • ThevehicleregistrationexpiresinMay2015.Registrationcanberenewed inMay2015becausethereisacurrentandpassinginspectionatthetimeofregistration. • AMay2016registrationstickerisissuedtorepresentthevehicle’snewinspectionandregistrationexpirationdate.

AftertheSyncUpYear • March1,2016andthereafter • Vehicleswhichdonotreceiveacommercialinspection:Registrationpermitted ifapassingvehicleinspectionoccursinthe90days(3months)priortothevehicle’sregistrationstickerexpires. • Vehicleswhichdoreceiveacommercialinspection:Registrationpermittedifavehiclehasacurrent,passinginspectionattimeofregistration. • Usedvehiclessoldbyadealermusthaveaninspectionwithin180daysofdateofsale. • Notimeframerequirementfornewvehicles. • Example: 1.VehicleregistrationstickerexpiresMay2016.2. Vehiclemustobtainapassingvehicleinspectionwithin90dayspriortothe • May31,2016expiration,inordertorenewontime. • Vehicle's90day/3monthinspectionwindow:March1,2016‐May31, 2016. 6

DetailsbeginningMarch1,2015 • StandardExemptRegistration • Only vehiclesrequiringinspectionsareimpacted. • An “expiration”month and year,based onthelastdateofinspection,will be assignedtothevehiclerecord. • Will receivea renewalnoticecoincidingwiththeinspectionexpiration. Inspectionfeeduewill beonrenewal notice. • Exemptagency paystheinspectionfeetothecounty(walk‐in,mail). • Registrationstickerissuedand should bedisplayedonthevehicle. • Multi‐YearRegistration(24or36months) • Eliminated24 and 36month optionforrenewal in September2014 with RTS release7.5.0. • Only new passengercarsand lighttruckssold byTexas dealersmayreceive2yearsofinitialregistrationattimeof title • Customerswill receiveanInspection FeeNotice. Theymustcompletean inspectionand paytheinspectionfeetothecountybywalk‐in or mail.
