This guide provides a structured approach to crafting impactful conclusions in academic writing. It emphasizes the importance of restating the thesis in new words, summarizing main points, and making relevant comparisons and connections between characters and choices. The conclusion should broaden the discussion to apply insights about happiness and life choices, encouraging readers to reflect on their own experiences. Additionally, proper MLA citation formatting for works cited is highlighted, ensuring clarity and adherence to academic standards.

Conclusions Thinking about the “So What” with some MLA thrown in for good measure.
Conclusion • Restate your thesis • NOT in the same words as your introduction • Summarize your main points • Are there comparisons to be made between characters? (Green) • Are there connections between these choices? (Blue or Yellow)
Conclusion – The big ideas • Broaden your topic to apply the ideas of the body paragraphs to happiness in general. • How are these choices important in life? • What can the reader or realize about happiness from understanding your paper? • Closing sentence should relate back to the reader.
Works Cited • MLA citation of BOTH books (use Easybib, etc.) • Gatsby – be sure to cite OUR edition • Foster and Hicks – Citation is on the Happiness Inventory handouts • Cite any additional quotes/data used in introduction • Proper Format • Alphabetical order • Hanging indent • Double spaced Works Cited does not have to be on a separate page. Feel free to skip a line at the end of your paper.
