ICS Objective in the design of Rapid Image: • Combining the Flexibility of the Network with the speed of a dedicated hardware duplicator. • With image sizes rapidly increasing downloading an image via the Network and expending it into the computer local hard drive becomes a major bottle neck in MFG environment. With the current available Network bandwidth and the amount of data that has to be distributed the process becomes ineffective and less desirable.

Objective continue.. • The traditional concept of a batch Hard Drive Duplication, where the image is copied from the local “Master” hard drive to multiple target drives offers great speed performance but becomes inconvenient or not feasible if images are changing frequently or if every target drive needs a different image.

  6. Objective continue.. • ICS’s challenge and objective was to use the Network flexibility in retrieving images from the Network servers and downloading them efficiently into the local duplicator. Then design a device that can duplicate multiple images at very high speed to multiple targets concurrently.

  7. Objective continue.. • Support SATA and SAS drives automatically: • The use of IDE drives in the lower cost market is rapidly declining and SATA drives are the natural replacement for them. SCSI hard drives which are used mostly on higher cost servers are being replaced by SAS hard drives (Serial Attached SCSI). Using the SCSI protocol and sending serialized data to the host through SATA-like connectors, ICS’s goal was to create a unit that will support both of these interfaces without the use of any adapters.

Objective continue.. • 1-Gigabit (or more) Ethernet Connections: • User is able to download a hard drive image from the network to the local “Master” storage of the unit at very high speeds, while the unit is copying another images to target drives. • Upload an image from the local master or a target drive to the Network. • Support variety of image formats, such as Microsoft’s Virtual Hard Drive (VHD), (in near future: “Ghost”).

  9. Objective continue.. • Large and “fast” local “master” storage: • Using large local reservoir of images relieves the Network loads and avoids Network clogs. • “Fast” local storage allows for high speed duplications of multiple different images to multiple different targets at the same time.

  10. Objective continue.. • Cable-less mechanism for SATA and SAS: • Reduce the manual labor time of plugging and unplugging cables. • Reduce the level of damaged drive connectors. • Minimize overall drive handling which improves drive reliability and production yield.

Objective continue.. • Use a standard and reliable OS. • XP PRO is the most reliable Windows OS in the market. • XP PRO is the most widely used. • It supports all the necessary Network requirements for image management and systems’ remote monitoring. • Since the machine is PC based, user can take advantage of any of the Windows based applications. For example, use Windows Explorer to view or modify master/target hard drives.

Objective continue.. • Drive Detection: • When using Windows XP to detect drives, the objective is also to have a very short drive detection period. • Simple and Easy to use: • Removable Drive trays/caddies with easy and simple ejection mechanism. • Touch pad display with soft keyboard and a color VGA display with intuitive menus.

  13. Objective continue.. • Drive Protection: • Hard drive EMI shielding. • Sophisticated cooling mechanism with temperature sensor. The accurate temperature reading is used to adjust the level of the fan's speed to the necessary minimum, and that way reduce the noise level and power requirements . • Remote Operation: • Control and monitor multiple machines from one PC over the Network. • Accumulate statistical data of the entire operation in a single Data Base on the Network.

  17. RapidImage7020cs – Cable-less Caddy • Two cable-less vertical drive caddies each with 8 drive slots.

  18. RapidImage7020cs – 3.5” Caddy bay • Each vertical caddy is attached to a caddy Bay that consists of: • High power fans • LED indicators per slot • A temperature sensor • A replaceable interface boards. • Thumb screws hold the caddy Bay to the main unit.

  20. RapidImage7020cs- 3.5” Caddy Bay + Drive Caddy • Caddy Bay and Drive Caddy are attached together very easily with two latches on both sides of the caddy. • The caddy Bay includes the ejection mechanism and a lever that must be set at “off” position (up) before loading drive to the Caddy.

RapidImage7020cs- 3.5” Caddy bay + Drive Caddy • Drives are loaded vertically into the caddy by dropping them into the slot at the correct orientation (back of the drive facing right) and with a small hand push (by the operator) on the top of the hard drive to secure connection with the interface boards. During the insertion, the ejection lever should be in the down (“on”) position.

RapidImage7020cs- Masters Caddy • Two “Master” Caddies, each with 2 horizontal drive slots. • Loading drives to the “Master” Caddy is done by sliding the drives until they lock with the SATA/SAS connector at the back of the caddy and then by closing the cover with 2 latches that press on the drives and secure them in place.

  27. 2.5” Drive caddy - option • Both Caddy Bay and the Drive Caddy need to be changed in order to support 2.5” drives. • The Caddy Bay can be easily replaced by unscrewing the thumb screws and mounting a new 2.5” Caddy Bay. • The 2.5” Drive Caddy is mounted in the same way as the 3.5” caddy.

  29. 2.5” Masters caddy add – on option • A slide-in 2.5” drive caddy is used to plug into the 3.5” drive slot. The 2.5” drives are mounted with shock absorbents inside the 2.5” caddy.

  30. Maintenance • Changing interface Boards: • Unscrewing 6 screws gives access to all 8 boards that are “floating” in the frame.

  31. IDE - Option • Replace the interface boards to the ones with IDE connectors. • The IDE data and power cables will be attached to the right wall of the slot and user will have to connect the cables to the drive from the top. • The drive is inserted with the connectors facing upwards.

  35. Color display • A full 8” VGA color LCD display along with a touch screen and intuitive visual menus make it easy to operate the unit. • (The unit can also be connected to external Monitor).

  36. Optional hardware • Display Protective Cover: • An epoxy glass flip window that is attached to the unit over the LCD display and protects the screen from cracks and scratches in harsh operating environments.

RapidImage 7012cs • Includes: • 8-slots caddy bay • 8-slots drive caddy • 2 master horizontal caddies, each with 2 drive slots. • Can copy up to 11 target drives from one master drive. • Upgradable to RapidImage 7020cs: • This can be done at ICS facility for the price difference between the RI7012 and RI7020.

Assignment of “Masters” and “Targets” • Any slot position on the master and the target caddies can be configured as Master or Target. • Multi copy sessions can be performed simultaneously where any image can be copied to selected targets. • One master with multi images can be copied to multi targets. (For example: With the same master hard drive you can copy 2 different images to 2 different targets) • One target drive cannot be “fed” from 2 master drives.

RI Speed of the Copy and Drive Detection for both models • Minimal speed degradation when all targets are connected. • Copy 1:19 at 6GB/mintues with SAS drives at 100% Copy mode. • Speed is lower when using IQcopy mode (only allocated clusters are copied and the file system is scaled to the new drive size) and when drive is not defragmented. • A full Windows drive detection is very fast (under one minute for 19 drives).
