    3. Inorganic Molecules Molecules that do not contain a carbon backbone and are not formed by living things Still important to life Examples: CO2 H2O O2

    4. There are four groups of organic compounds found in living things 1. Carbohydrates 2. Proteins 3. Nucleic Acids 4. Lipids

    5. Carbohydrates Consists only of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen (1:2:1) Living things use these as main source of energy

    6. Lipids Made mostly from carbon and hydrogen atoms. Used to store energy. Also important parts of biological membranes and waterproof coverings.

    7. Nucleic Acids Contain hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus. A bunch of nucleotides chained together. Store and transmit genetic information.

    8. Proteins Contain nitrogen as well as carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen Amino acids chained together Control the rate of reactions and regulate cell processes. Used to form bones/muscles. Transport substances into or out of cells or help fight disease.
